SELBY will meet Holgate in the final of the York Amateur Bowls Association's Williamson Cup after a thrilling win over Holgate WMC.

The high-quality tie saw the lead swap hands several times throughout and, with the last three rinks left to complete their final end, the aggregate scores were all-square.

All three rinks were only separated by a single shot on the last end, but Selby shaded it by a single shot, winning two of the three to book their place in the final.

In the other semi-final, Holgate proved too much for division three outfit Copmanthorpe, who flew the flag proudly for the lower tiers. Holgate won 90-64.

In the Freedom and Fellowship Cup, second division Osbaldwick found Dringhouses too hot to handle, falling to a 120-51 defeat.

Another third division club, Poppleton, made a better job of trying to overcome a first division side, running Dunnington close before falling 82-69 in a tight match.

In YABA division one, RI Amateurs tightened their grip on top spot, winning 7-1 at Dringhouses 7-1 while nearest challengers Holgate WMC lost 6-2 at home in the derby with Holgate, going down by just half a shot on the aggregate.

RI Corinthians added to lowly Haxby Road's troubles by beating them 7-1 at home.

Shipton continued their march towards promotion from division two with two wins in a week, beating fellow challengers Bootham 6.5-1.5 at home and struggling Burnholme 6-2 away.

Bottom club West Park gained their first win of the season, 7-1 at Hull Road Park, before the reverse fixture at saw an exact reversal of the scoreline.

Clifton inflicted a heavy 8-0 defeat on struggling Osbaldwick.

Poppleton Road WMC had a good week in division three, defeating Stamford Bridge twice, 7-1 at home and 5-3 away, to consolidate their strong position at the top.

Poppleton had a comfortable 8-0 win at Minster to keep themselves in the frame for promotion, while Scarcroft thumped Retreat 7-1.

The YABA Veterans' Lord Mayors Singles tournament takes place at West Park on Monday, starting at 2pm. Players must register by 1.45pm.

Meanwhile, Clarence came from behind to beat Railway Institute 57-44 in the final of the York C&IU Evening League Knock-out Cup.

RI led by three shots after the first four ends and, although Mal Bulmer's rink kept the score ticking over, winning the next three, the Jeff Dobbin and Gary Bunce rinks won four of the next five ends to give Clarence an overall lead of six shots.

Bulmer's rink could not keep their momentum going, allowing Phil Reeves to score ten shots to their two during the last five ends, while Dobbin and Bunce continued to pile on the pressure, scoring 14 shots between them.

Peter Riley's rink managed a four on the 17th for RI, but the game was over.

The cup was presented to Clarence vice-captain Mick Clark by Alan Potter, chairman of the York CIU Branch Games Council.

Clarence also took advantage of Holgate having a bye to build an 15-point lead in the Evening League table, by taking maximum points from a depleted South Bank.

However, South Bank put up a good fight with John Snowden, Alan Gebbie and Kath Hardcastle only losing by having a quarter of their score deducted for playing short.

Railway Institute, in third, saw off Acomb 8-0 to make up some ground on the leaders.

In the Afternoon League, last week's joint-leaders, Acomb 'A' and Holgate 'A', both lost allowing Holgate 'B' and Railway Institute, after their recent wins, to share top spot.

South Bank had a good win at Acomb 'B' and St Clements 'A' enjoyed their first win of the season, against Tramways.
