SELBY teenager Jess Williams is gearing up to fight for England in the Great Britain schools' Three Nations boxing tournament at the Doncaster Dome this weekend.

The 14-year-old won selection after winning her second England Schools title in two years thanks to three victories on consecutive weekends.

The triumph granted her the number one ranking in England at her age level in the under-52kg weight division, having held the same spot in the U48kg category last year.

Williams has been coached by Mickey Bradshaw, of Mickey's Boxing Academy in Selby, since the age of nine.

Bradshaw said: "We do not know of any other schoolgirl who has won two school titles in a row.

"This is a huge achievement for this young girl, who trains so hard.

"Jess has boxed and beaten juniors in the year above all this last season and sparred all over the North with girls two or three years older than her and more experienced as well."

Given the dearth of girl boxers at this level, Williams was the only female in the country who had to negotiate two bouts to reach the final.

In late May, she travelled to Liverpool to take on Neve Taylor Dilks, from Doncaster, in the quarter-finals, winning by a unanimous points decision.

The following week she went to Milton Keynes for a semi-final against Hannah Mortier, from Rayne ABC, Essex, where she secured a win by stoppage to proceed to finals day in Newark.

There, she totally dominated her opponent, Jude English, from Hamer, Manchester, to take another unanimous decision and bag her second national crown and a famous pair of golden gloves.

It also assured her a place in the England squad for the Three Nations schools event against Scotland and Wales, plus a training day at English Institute of Sport, Sheffield, this month where she met the England coaches.

Bradshaw, 40, said they were awaiting confirmation about Williams' opponent in her quest for the GB title, adding: "Unfortunately us club coaches can't do the corners when they box for England, which is the reason for the training camp, but we will be there in full support for Jess."
