YORKSHIRE are on the right path to success in the Royal London Cup, according to Vikings coach Jason Gillespie.

The county have reached the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the English 50-over competition in the last two seasons, having played some impressive cricket.

Although they have faltered at critical stages in knockout matches against Durham and, last year, Gloucestershire at Headingley, their performances have been a far cry from their Twenty20 nightmares.

"We played some good cricket last year in the Royal London," said Gillespie ahead of today's North Group opener against Worcestershire under lights at Headingley (2pm).

"We had some good individual performances and I think, as a group, the attack bowled well and complemented each other well. We ticked off some big partnerships too and I also thought we fielded well.

"That's going to be our challenge, to improve those standards again. Each of the disciplines, we need to make sure we're ticking those off.

"I'm really confident we can have a good campaign if we stick to the basics and hammer them home."

Gillespie believes a reason for the difference between Yorkshire's quality of performance in one-day and T20 cricket is down to the players' role awareness.

He said: "That's been something we've spoken a lot about. We've had a couple of team meetings over the last couple of years.

"As a coaching staff, we've specifically said 'are you clear on your roles?' They go 'yes' – and then in the team reviews, they're going 'I didn't know what my role was'. Hang on a minute, let's not make excuses.

"Our big catch-cry has been 'you need to take personal responsibility for your roles. If you are not clear on anything, it is your responsibility to make sure you are clear. If you are not clear, seek clarification. If you are still not clear, seek it again until you are'.

"We are banging that home because the lads have spoken in appraisals and team talks about wanting to take responsibility for their own game.

"These lads, there can't be any excuses – and we're not going to tolerate any excuses. We've made that very clear."

Captain Alex Lees and Gillespie have named a 13-man squad for today's clash, with Jack Brooks remaining on the sidelines in a bid to keep him as fresh as possible for Championship cricket.

Gillespie said: "We try to win every game of cricket we play and I have said this for years. Some people question us when we are resting players or whatever – but we strive to win every game we play.

"When you talk about resting bowlers, my response is very clear. When a bowler has bowled 50 or 60 overs in a week and then you've got a one-day game the next day, is he still one of your best bowlers, taking into account the lack of preparation and tiredness? That's why we've always said you need a squad of bowlers to get done."

While Yorkshire won four of eight group matches to qualify last year, Worcestershire only won one of eight and finished second bottom of the table. Today's clash is being televised on Sky Sports.
