YORK City chief Jackie McNamara has decided against taking his new squad on tour or away for a training camp this summer.

The Bootham Crescent boss has decided there are greater financial priorities following the club’s relegation from the National League and reasoned that team bonding can be just as easily achieved at City’s Wigginton Road training base.

Last summer, former boss Russ Wilcox incorporated a visit to the FA’s national training headquarters at St George’s Park in Burton, as part of his pre-season schedule.

Twelve months earlier, Wilcox’s predecessor Nigel Worthington opted to prepare for the new campaign with a break in Scotland that incorporated friendlies against Raith Rovers and St Johnstone.

Outlining his reasons for staying in North Yorkshire during July, McNamara explained: “Financially, I don’t think it would be right for us to go away after all the club has been through.

"I’ve done it before when I took Partick to the army barracks in Catterick, but the training ground is there for us to use and it’s more important for the new team to come together and get familiar with their surroundings and each other.

“I want them to return ready to go as well. They will be tested when they report back for training and we will play the first game within ten days.”
