POPPLETON Ladies football team are celebrating after winning the North Riding Ladies League for the first time having previously finished as runners-up and in third place.

The Tigers have had an incredible season winning all but two of their 19 league games, losing one and drawing one. The team has also reached the semi-finals of the County Cup where they lost out to eventual winners York.

The team has decided not to take up their option to move up a division, opting instead to have the chance to defend their title in the North Riding League.

A club spokesman explained: "The ladies team feel the travel involved in playing teams across the North of England, some of whom are near the Scottish Borders was too much and would take away from the fun of playing.

"The team take their football incredibly seriously from kick-off on Sundays but once the final whistle goes they want to socialise with their opponents."

The Tigers received their trophy from North Riding League chairman Barry Castleton at the Poppleton clubhouse.
