OVINGTON Cricket Club have been banned from using their Knavesmire pitch for HPH York Vale League and Cup games until further notice.

The ground has been severely hit by flooding during one of the wettest winters on record.

The move follows an official inspection by league chairman Shane Hargrave and grounds officer Steve Relf.

Although the square is in good condition, the sodden heavily-sanded outfield is considered dangerous and unfit for cricket.

A league spokesman said: “The league has not taken this decision lightly. It’s not the club’s fault, but unfortunately it is not right to play cricket on the ground at the moment, Hopefully the club will be able to get it back in order soon,.”

Given good weather, it is hoped the club will be able to quickly repair and re-seed the outfield. The ground could be back in use in four to six weeks time provided it passes another inspection.

Ovington run three teams in the Vale League with the firsts and seconds using Knavesmire while the thirds play at nearby Millthorpe School.

Ovington II’s second division home game last Saturday against Askham Bryan was switched to the York University sportsfield in Heslington Lane and this Saturday’s big first division game against rivals and leaders Bishopthorpe will also hopefully be played at the university.
