DAVE KERMODE and Bob Elliott enjoyed a remarkable comeback victory during New Earswick Indoor Bowls Club’s week of winter league play-off finals.

Kermode and Elliot, playing in the Australian Pairs final, were 21-11 down to Eric Moon and Dave Moorhouse with four ends to play.

But they picked up 11 shots, including a six at the 19th end, to win 22-21.

There was another fightback in the Gents’ Triples, where Rob Dunhill, Graham Bell and Anthony Scruton came back from 18-10 down with three ends to play to beat Dave Clayton, Kevin Liddell & Brian Gray 20-18.

Sue Todd, Majorie Watson and Mel Lancaster beat Lynn Page, Margaret Littlechild and Dave Firn 20-9 in the Veterans’ Mixed Triples.

Lancaster also teamed up with Lorna Tordoff and Bob Edwards to win the Mixed Triples. They led from the start to beat Irene Warrington, Bob Barrett and Barry Johnson 19-13.

Eric Moon, Fred Whur, Guy Raines and John Baxter won the Vets’ Fours, beating Dick Hardy, Barry Harrison, Dave Sykes and Colin Pickup 17-12.

The Ladies’ Pairs title went to Tordoff and Moyra Headley as they beat Denise Elliott and Irene Warrington 22-12.

Margaret Morgan, Pat Walker and Margaret Moss were too strong on the day for Lynn Page, Monica Morgan and Kath Sykes as they took the Ladies’ Triples final 21-6.

A close Gents’ Fours final saw the scores tied at 14-14 after 17 ends.

Dave Clayden, Bill Chittock, Andrew Fothergill and Brian Gray then picked up a four at the next end to go on and beat Joe Barker, Bob Barrett, Barry Harrison and Ralph Tiplady 19-17.

In the Men’s Pairs, farther and son Dave and Gary Chapman, after leading 10-9 at the half-way mark, slipped to a 26-12 defeat to Bob Elliott and Brian Gray.

Denise Elliott, Gemma Broadhead, Monica Morgan and Irene Warrington won 11 of the first 13 ends to lead Lynn Page, Doramy Bellwood, Shirley Hopwood and Kath Sykes 18-2.

The latter team picked up consecutive fours at the 14th and 15th ends but there was no way back in a 23-13 defeat.

The Men’s Club fours saw the Clarence team of Tony Akrill, Mick Head, Nigel Harrison and Paul Dawson trail the Shipton team of Rob Paylor, Dave Clayden, Kevin Lddell and Brian Gray for the whole match - before levelling the scores at 17-17 after 21 ends.

They then scored a single at the extra end to take the lead for the only time and take the title 18-17.

The Veteran Gents’ Triples and Mixed Pairs finals were both one-sided.

Judd Wakes, Dave Sykes and Ralph Tiplady beat Gordon Fratson, Bob Elliott and Bruce Dobson 23-5 in the former, and Irene Warrington and Barry Johnson saw off Vic Wooley and Pat Walker 27-9 in the latter.

At the end of a busy week, the Minster Men of Sally Domville, John Harrison and Gary Jones beat Bob Barrett, Barry Harrison and Ralph Tiplady 15-11 to take the Club Any Triples crown.
