RYAN Sidebottom handed Yorkshire an injury scare yesterday when he limped off with a left ankle problem during yet another weather-hit day at Edgbaston.

The 38-year-old reported a problem to physio Kunwar Bansil early in his spell before lunch as Warwickshire responded to 379 all out in this Specsavers County Championship fixture.

The left-armer was then unable to complete his sixth over, and he will almost certainly sit out today’s final day having seen a specialist.

Sidebottom is also set to miss Sunday’s Division One clash with Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, opening the door for David Willey to debut.

An unbeaten 101 from opener Varun Chopra meant Warwickshire enjoyed a productive third day as they closed on 205-2 from 61.1 overs.

A further 29.5 were lost due to rain and even snow before lunch and after tea, taking the total overs lost throughout the match to 117.2.

“It’s been bizarre. Snow is certainly a new one for me. I've never seen a game of cricket snowed off before,” said Jason Gillespie, who is still waiting for definitive news on Sidebottom.

"Sid felt a little bit of discomfort in his left ankle, and the medical staff are assessing him. He's a bit sore.

"It happened when he was bowling. He called Kunwar after his second or third over, he got a bit of pain relief, kept going, but then felt it again.

"It's very unlikely he will bowl (on day four). It's also safe to assume it's pretty unlikely he will play at Trent Bridge.

"It's pretty safe to assume that David Willey will play in the next game.

“The plan has been to play him at Trent Bridge. The whole idea was to give him an extra break after his big winter.

“He's just been building himself up nicely, and there's a strong chance he will play.”

Sidebottom was the final Yorkshire wicket to fall yesterday morning as they advanced from 368-9, with Steve Patterson finishing on a career best unbeaten 63.

But Yorkshire were unable to build on an early wicket for Jack Brooks, who bowled Ian Westwood with a beauty - squared him up and nicked the top of off-stump - to leave Warwickshire at 18-1.

Unfortunately for Yorkshire, Chopra and Ian Bell, who made 59, shared 132 for the second wicket either side of lunch before the latter was caught at slip off the impressive Adil Rashid.

Elegant Chopra then shared an unbroken 55 for the third wicket with Jonathan Trott, whose unbeaten 38 came at good pace.

There was no play beyond 4.30pm.

"I think we've been good in patches,” added Gillespie, who allowed his players to wear beanie hats in the field.

“Straight after lunch, Jack (Brooks) and Liam (Plunkett) bowled well. Then we've just let them off the hook a bit.

“Rash was really good and Patto (Steve Patterson) bowled well. The efforts were excellent, so I can't fault that.

"It's been a funny old game. I don't think either side has really got into the game because we've been on and off all the time.

"I genuinely haven't come across anything like this weather before.

“The lads were saying it's colder than 2012 at Scarborough when we played Leicestershire and Ramnaresh Sarwan was wearing his full tracksuit underneath his whites!”
