JACKIE MCNAMARA is predicting a bleak future for players who don’t make his end-of-season retained list at York City.

The Minstermen will have 13 players out of contract this summer.

They are Josh Carson, Danny Galbraith, Taron Hare, Femi Ilesanmi, Michael Ingham, Kenny McEvoy, Russell Penn, Derek Riordan, Callum Rzonca, Emile Sinclair, Luke Summerfield, George Swan and Dave Winfield.

McNamara is currently considering which, if any, he might offer new terms at Bootham Crescent and cited the examples of unattached trio Eddie Nolan, Marvin McCoy and Anthony Straker as an example of what can happen to players who have been released by a struggling club.

Both Nolan and McCoy have been without a club since leaving Bootham Crescent in January, while Straker was told his services were no longer required at Grimsby following a brief two-month spell.

Keith Lowe, meanwhile, could not save Kidderminster from National League relegation after being cut free by McNamara, along with fellow centre-back John McCombe, who has been performing for a mid-table Macclesfield team in the same division.

Home-grown midfielder Tom Platt also joined National League play-off hopefuls Harrogate Town after his City contract was terminated last month.

Issuing a warning for imminent departures from the club, McNamara said: “Anthony Straker has just been released by Grimsby and Eddie Nolan and Marvin McCoy still haven’t found a club.

“There are others at the bottom end of the Conference and there’s a reason for that. We will have to see where some of the other players end up as well.”

Despite relegation from the Football League having now been confirmed, though, McNamara has revealed that playing for City remains an attractive proposition for countless players and admitted that he is excited by the prospect of undergoing a comprehensive recruitment drive during the close season.

He added: “I will be having a meeting with the chairman to discuss recruitment and the budget and things will be a lot clearer in terms of what we’ve got to offer after that. But we’ll be looking at all the different leagues to see what’s out there and we have already been inundated by a good influx of players who could come in.

“That’s exciting and something we would have looked to do, regardless of which league we were in, because we need freshness about the place.”

McNamara has already told Michael Coulson, who is bound for St Johnstone next season, that there is no need for him to report to the club again with just two games of the campaign left to play.

“He is injured, so there was no point in him being here because he wasn’t going to be playing and he’s signed for St Johnstone,” the City chief explained. “He’s been stop-start with injury since I’ve been here and I didn’t see the best of him.

“A few have struggled with injury and I’ve hardly seen anything from Jake Hyde either.”

Hyde is one of six players under contract at Bootham Crescent next season.

The others are James Berrett, Matty Dixon, Scott Flinders, Vadaine Oliver and Reece Thompson.

It would be no surprise, however, if some of those players are placed on the transfer list or offered severance packages with McNamara adding: “There are still a few who are under contract that I will need to talk about with the chairman.”
