THE front page of The Press yesterday was remarkable for the mind-boggling disconnect between the photo of angry York City fans venting their displeasure at the club’s players and managerial team and the story of the club’s chairman asking these self-same fans, plus countless others who couldn’t bear to witness City’s descent into non-League football at Accrington, for £1 million.

While every true City fan owes chairman Jason McGill a debt of gratitude for helping to rescue our beloved club from the abyss, I’m afraid McGill’s plea for £1 million will fall on a lot of deaf ears.

Why should we supporters throw good money after bad?

This has been a horrendous couple of years for our club, marked by two appalling managerial appointments, some of the worst football ever seen at Bootham Crescent and a growing distance between the board and the fans.

Press journalist Dave Flett put it superbly when he wrote: “When the club last went out of the Football League in 2004, there was at least a sense of unity at Bootham Crescent, but that has been eroded at nearly every layer during this most wretched of seasons.”

In these circumstances, I am wondering whether to renew my season ticket, let alone contribute to a £1 million fighting fund, when our club is heading for the rocks under Jackie McNamara.
