PAUL HUMPHREYS was in devastating form as he beat Stuart Smith to win York & District Indoor Bowls Club's gents' singles title for the first time.

Humphreys won 21-7 on a finals day which saw plenty of good-quality bowls.

Sue Allen was similarly superb in the ladies' singles final as she beat England Under-25s star Zoe Eagles 21-6 to retain her crown, having stormed 13-3 up inside six ends.

Eagles was probably a bit drained having had lifted the U25s title only two hours earlier, pipping champion Neal Macdonald in a thriller.

Eagles led 14-4 but Macdonald - who overturned a 17-7 deficit to win last year's final - fought back on this occasion too to draw level at 19-19 and then 20-20 to take the game to a last end.

Eagles laid shot and Macdonald just missed with his last to give his opponent the title for the fourth time - and last as she is no longer eligible.

Another exciting game saw Pauline Cooper edge Pam Richardson 21-20 at the death of the ladies' over-55s singles final.

Richardson looked on course for a third successive title as she laid what would have been a match-winning shot but Cooper played a magical last wood to keep her chances alive at 20-17.

Cooper picked up a couple more singles amid some excellent bowling and then sneaked in a two to win 21-20.

Alan Vowles took the veterans' singles title for the second year running as he beat Tex Stevens 21-6.

The veterans' plate began closely but fours on the sixth and eighth ends gave Dave Clarke a cushion and he beat Allan May 21-13.

Meanwhile, this Saturday, starting at 9.45am, York & District IBC stage their round-robin Gordon Little Trophy.

At 11am, the final of the club's mixed pairs takes place in a repeat of last year's showdown as Dave Stroughair and Joan Jackson seek revenge over Alan Vowles and Helen Wood.

On Sunday, Yorkshire Ladies president Joan Jackson oversees her finals day as York IBC host four games, starting at 10am with the fours between Helen Walker's team and Julie Tappin's side from Scarborough.

At 1pm, a Doncaster duo play Hornsea rivals in the pairs.

Then at 2pm, York's Helen Walker faces Harrogate's Angela Spilsbury in the over-60s singles and Carol Instone's York side take on Sue Mullholland's Harrogate team in the triples.

On Monday and Tuesday, Thanet Road hosts the national Civil Service singles and triples finals.

On Monday at 7pm, Stroughair's team take on Ray Clark's in the gents' knockout triples and Malcolm Thompson takes on Stevens in the gents' singles plate.
