YORK City enjoyed their first back-to-back Sky Bet League Two home wins of the season following a 2-1 triumph over Notts County.

First-half goals from Michael Coulson and Bradley Fewster put the Minstermen in the ascendancy but an own goal by full debutant Lubo Satka reduced the deficit just past the hour.

City, though, showed great nerve and spirit to secure victory.

Notts County made the early running, forcing a flurry of corners with Izale McLeod calling Scott Flinders into action on three minutes following a tame header.

Free kicks from Liam Noble and Jon Stead also cleared Flinders’ crossbar.

On 17 minutes, good skill and opportunism from Stead close to the byline saw his deft lob bounce off the top of the bar and McLeod’s follow-up effort was then blocked by Russell Penn.

Alan Smith’s header from a Noble corner was then parried away well by Flinders but it was City who forged in front on 24 minutes with their first shot of the match.

A long ball out of defence from Kyle Cameron sailed over the head of County defender Gary MacKenzie with Coulson ghosting through the left channel.

Roy Carroll initially decided to come off his line but, when he changed his mind and tried to scramble back, Coulson lifted a perfectly-measured lob over the former Manchester United keeper with the outside of his right boot from 15 yards.

Moments later, a firmly-struck Coulson free kick was well gathered by Carroll and Kenny McEvoy also went close from distance.

With the hosts growing in confidence, McEvoy’s low right-wing cross was then diverted wide from close in by Fewster.

At the other end, Stead’s 30-yard drive was comfortably saved by Flinders and the ex-Blackburn striker also flicked a header over from Jason Banton’s left-wing cross.

But it was the Minstermen who claimed a second goal on 39 minutes following an excellent passage of possession play that ended with Penn’s back heel releasing McEvoy through the right channel.

His low cross was then turned into the away net from a couple of yards by a poaching Fewster.

Stead continued to look the visitors’ main threat after the interval, shooting narrowly wide on the turn from the edge of the box and also going close with an athletic overhead kick on the hour mark.

But the visitors were given a route back into the game in bizarre circumstances when Satka’s attempted headed back pass, following Noble’s right-wing cross, sailed over a helpless Flinders.

Noble’s 20-yard drive then produced a scrambled save from Flinders following a Cameron mistake before a contentious decision saw County centre-back Haydn Hollis escape with just a yellow card as he hauled down McEvoy when seemingly his side’s last man.

The subsequent free kick was curled well over by Danny Galbraith and substitute Jake Hyde also shot wide from 20 yards.

For the visitors, Noble’s 25-yard deflected attempt curled inches wide and a Banton effort almost uprooted the corner flag as City held on for three vital points.
