THE man who scored the first ever try at Super League's Magic Weekend has become the newest member of the York City Knights Foundation team.

The body has announced that former Bradford Bulls winger Andy Smith will take over from Stanley Gene on a full-time basis and will extend the Foundation's work in schools.

Smith is best known for representing the Bulls, Salford City Reds and Halifax and the 31-year-old notched the first score when touching down for Harlequins, now London Broncos, at Millennium Magic in Cardiff in 2007.

A Foundation statement said: "Andy will bring a huge character to the community team having gone through the player development system himself and then on to experiencing life as full-time Super League player.

"He has been coached by some of the biggest names in the game including Brian Noble, Karl Harrison and Brian McDermott and has considerable experience in coaching the game in schools, clubs and on player pathways."

Neil Gulliver, Foundation Manager, added: β€œIt is another piece of great news for the Foundation that we can recruit someone of the calibre of Andy and we look forward to seeing him in action coaching children across York and the surrounding areas. Andy has a great level of experience in playing and coaching people at all levels of the game and I am sure he will further enhance our work.”

The Foundation added that Gene had taken the chance to coach performance team TNA Lions back in his homeland of Papua New Guinea.

The statement added: "In the short time Stanley worked with the Foundation he was very popular in the schools and we will be continuing to work with him and his own foundation in future and wish him all the best with his new role."
