THE mastermind behind a Walker Cup and Curtis Cup star is planning another youth revolution at Sandburn Hall Golf Club.

Steve Robinson, who nurtured the early careers of six-time European Tour title-winning professional Simon Dyson and British and European Amateur champion Emma Brown, has extended a junior academy programme at the Flaxton course.

Two decades ago at Malton & Norton GC, Robinson delivered elite coaching that brought national and international recognition to the Welham Park course.

Now Sandburn's head professional, he has embarked on a new journey - and is looking to help 20 youngsters, who are determined to learn and improve, become the best golfers they can be.

As well as a £49 membership plan for six to 13-year-olds and £99 for 14 to 17-year-olds, the club will back Robinson to provide 16 hours of group coaching sessions for £50 as the England women and Yorkshire coach expands a successful scheme that unearthed some promising talent when it began last year.

He explained: "The kids that came along to the sessions last year, half a dozen of them did really well. From a club point of view, juniors are always good.

"From my point of view, going back quite a few years, we had an academy (at Malton & Norton) and, from that, we produced a British amateur champion, a European amateur champion and a national assistants champion of GB&I. I am talking about Simon Dyson, Emma Brown and Chris Tyson.

"That just came from a junior academy at a club. A Curtis Cup player. A Walker Cup player. We also had a lad called Darren Rix who won the Boys' Championship. From that little junior academy, we produced some national players.

"Sometimes, the journey is more important than the destination. I enjoyed that little journey. As long as I enjoy it, I don't mind putting the time in with the kids. We've got some juniors with potential. For them to continue on their journey, they need my time."

He added: "If I get 18 or 20 juniors that are dedicated and want to improve, I am quite prepared to put my time in to help them do that.

"We've already had quite a few join up. It's limited to 20 places and the reason is that we want to make sure they have a quality experience and we spend time with them to help them become the best players they can be.

"It's not about a numbers game. We want to produce some quality golfers and we have already got a good half dozen there that are showing some very good quality."
