DANNY GALBRAITH has stressed all members of York City's squad must play their part if the club are to get out of League Two relegation trouble.

The former Hibernian and Gillingham winger has played a crucial role off the substitutes' bench as the Minstermen picked up four points from the last two games - and he believes that everyone pulling together is the only way the Bootham Crescent outfit will retain their Football League status.

Having teed up Luke Summerfield’s late equaliser at Carlisle after coming on as a substitute the game before, Galbraith was also hailed from the bench to sink Stevenage and reasoned that the Minstermen’s squad now boasts strength in depth, saying: “I didn’t train all week before the Stevenage game because I had a tight groin but I was desperate to be involved.

“You’re always disappointed when you’re not in the team and I felt I had contributed in the previous game but the gaffer stressed to everyone, before the match, that every player is important because there are a lot of fixtures coming up. It’s important for him to have boys, whether it be myself or somebody else, that can come off the bench and make an impact.

“He’s got options that maybe he never had before so, when he looks at his substitutes, he can see that there are people who can change a game. In the position we are in that’s vital, because it’s not just about the starting XI or the 18 on match duty.

“All 25 members of the squad can play their part because we need to be together. That’s the only way we will get up the table.”

A modest Galbraith was quick, meanwhile to share Saturday’s plaudits with the rest of the players and, in particular, Dave Winfield for his vital goal-line clearance seconds before the winning strike that gave City a 2-1 win.

“Dave Winfield’s clearance was as good as a goal,” he declared. “He did one against Morecambe and we got the result and he did it again.

“That’s all about never giving up because it would have been easy just to watch it go in the net. All these little things contribute to us winning and everyone played their part in defence and attack. I’m sure, if we keep doing that, we will be fine.”

Despite a trip to top-of-the-table Northampton next on the Minstermen’s agenda, Galbraith is undaunted by the challenge of taking on the Sky Bet League One hopefuls this weekend, adding: “I’ve never come away from any game thinking they were a better team than us.

“Carlisle and Morecambe were a lot higher up the table than we were but we got results against them and, when we’ve lost games by the odd goal, it’s normally been down to a lack of concentration.

“We’ve had a lot of changes in the back four, but I think things are really starting to settle down now. The whole defence played well against Stevenage.

“They didn’t look like scoring and I don’t think their goal was a defensive mistake.”
