SHERBURN Bears beat Leeds-based Wortley Dragons 46-12 to maintain their 100 per cent record in Pennine League Divison Four East.

Sherburn scored nine tries in claiming their fourth win on the spin as their young side showed speed and exuberance.

Second row Jake Scales fired in the opening try of the match after just five minutes but the visitors soon responded with a try of their own.

The home side racked up three scores in 15 minutes, the first from forward Ronnie Roebuck, Rob Culshaw adding the extras, before substitute Nico Deville also crossed.

Five minutes later saw Culshaw turn provider as he played in 17-year-old winger Josh Johnson to give the home side a commanding 20-6 lead.

Sherburn added two more scores, through full back Ben Pugh and Deville, with Jordan Richards converting the latter, as Bears went in 34-6 ahead at the break.

Sherburn did not step off the gas as Culshaw showed his finesse to give his side further breathing space.

Wortley’s frustration was evident when a reckless high tackle sparked a scuffle in which referee Kevin Moore quickly stepped in as players from both sides were sent to the sin bin.

The eighth try was scored by Richards with a quick dash to the line and the kick from Culshaw put the home side 40-6 up on 67 minutes.

Culshaw followed up shortly after with his second score of the match, with young winger Johnson converting.

However, the final word came from Wortley as a quickly-taken tap penalty allowed them to take advantage and score their second try along with a successful conversion.

The impressive attacking and defensive skills of centre Jacob Scales earned him the man of the match award as the win left Bears in third place.
