AN entertaining game played in heavy conditions saw F1 Racing ease past Poppleton 5-1 to claim the last place in the York Minster Engineering League Senior Cup quarter-finals.

Poppleton took an early lead, but F1 drew level with a great left-footed effort by Paul Bentley and, after good interplay, Jonah Tomlin-Kent put them ahead at half-time.

F1 started better in the second half, but Poppleton always looked menacing on the break. Midway through, F1's Chris Dempsey made it 3-1, and right-back Chris Smith made the game safe with two well-taken goals late on.

Bad weather put paid to many of the league fixtures, though over half of the scheduled matches survived the heavy downpours.

Premier division leaders Wigginton Grasshoppers’ game at champions Riccall United went ahead and it was home side Riccall who won 3-1, completing the double over their opponents.

In a game of little flowing football, Riccall dominated possession in the first half and deservedly gained an advantage when Steve Lyon broke through to score.

Michael Clancy had to be at his best in the Wigginton goal to keep the score down to one at the break as he pulled off a couple of excellent saves.

Wiggy responded well after the interval, but a Riccall counter attack opened up their back four and Josh O’Neill produced a neat finish to make it 2-0.

The points were pretty much sealed when Gary Collier went clean through and curled the ball out of the reach of Clancy and into the goal.

A late consolation from Steve Jarvis was all Wiggy could muster despite a final 15 minutes of pressure.

The only other top-flight game to survive saw Old Malton St Mary's beat Tadcaster Magnets 3-0.

Despite holding their opposition in a goalless first half, Magnets had no response for Saints in the second as they finished strongly to bag the three points and move to within ten of the leaders with four games in hand.

Malton & Norton - unlucky to lose two penalty shoot-outs in cup games against neighbours St Mary's over the previous two weeks - made it three wins from three in division one with a 4-3 victory at home to Rawcliffe.

Jonny Moss, Niall Smallwood and Henry Wharton were on the mark for Rawcliffe.

Sporting Knavesmire went two behind at home to Pocklington but produced a fantastic finish as Ali Brown (2) and Danny Owers gave them a 3-2 win and moved them up to fifth.

In division two, Thorpe United maintained their 100 per cent start and moved to within a point of leaders Strensall following a 2-0 victory over Hamilton Panthers.

Kirkbymoorside won 3-0 at Stamford Bridge to go third, while Bishopthorpe pulled off a minor upset, beating visiting Barmby Moor 5-3. Simon Hammon, Jack Lockwood and Liam Booth were the Barmby scorers.

In the only game played in division three, Michael Walsh and Lewis Bootland stunned Selby Olympia by scoring second-half goals a minute apart to give Moor Lane a 2-1 victory.

Heworth Green made it seven wins on the bounce as they put three points between themselves and fellow division four title contenders The Raj FC, whose game was postponed.

Callum MacKenzie (2), Dan Marshall, Mark Foster, Declan Moon and Jericho Keys were on target as Green saw off LNER Builders 6-1.

Alex Hunt, Rob Tate and Bryan Robertson found the net as Pollington bagged a 3-2 home win over Wheldrake, for whom James Smith and Ashley Armitage replied.
