CITY of York surrendered a two-goal lead to eventually share the spoils with North Hockey Men's League premier division visitors Whitley Bay and Tynemouth.

Dan Ellwood and Freddie Heijbroek put the hosts in the driving seat with both netting during the opening ten minutes.

The first goal came from a period of possession in midfield, with Alex Cockram then deftly lifting the ball to Ellwood, who volleyed home from close range.

Cockram and Chris Wilson went on to tee up Heijbroek who deflected a reverse pass into the goal.

The visitors recovered, though to reduce the deficit before half-time and, during the second period, York lacked intensity and were caught out by a quick Whitley break from defence, as accurate passing led to an overload and the eventual equaliser.

Both goalkeepers were then called upon to ensure the score remained 2-2.

In division two east, York II went down 4-2 at North Shields.

Rob Newton and Pat Herriott both having sights of the home goal but Shields led 1-0 at the break despite some strong defensive work from debutant Alex Lake and stalwart Roz Ramli.

Shield went on to go 3-0 up but, with 12 minutes left, Tim Lister rounded the keeper and squared for Nick Casterton to score.

A green and yellow card, shown in the same incident, saw York reduced to nine men soon afterwards, though, with the home side taking advantage by scoring a fourth goal.

Some wonderful one-touch passing between Newton, Tom Pyman and Dan Tompkins at least saw the latter have the final say as he went through on goal and finished calmly.

In division 2 of the Yorkshire League, York IV were edged out 4-3 at Doncaster despite a Russell Bowry hat-trick.

After trailing 2-0 at half-time, Bowry replied for York but two further home goals put the hosts in the driving seat.

Bowry's two goals in the last ten minutes proved too little, too late.

Tony Brimble's brace saw York V defeat their Wakefield counterparts 2-0 in division four north.

The first goal was a brilliant solo effort with Brimble picking the ball up around the halfway line before running at a parting Wakefield, entering their D and finishing clinically.

In the second half, buoyed by the return of Graham Mackfall, York were resolute defence, providing the platform for Brimble to secure victory by converting a short corner.

York VI ended Mirfield's unbeaten division five north record with a 3-1 away win courtesy of Jono Scutt, Matt Besford and Paul Rowntree first-half goals and a string of excellent saves from Gordon Moore.

Besford was also on target in a 2-1 defeat for York VII against Airedale II with goalkeeper Ash Wardle putting in an excellent display.

City of York ladies crashed 5-0 a Kendal in the North Hockey League's premier division.

A 4-0 Yorkshire League premier division victory over Thirsk earned York ladies their first win of the season, opening the scoring when Corrine Wray dribbled around a handful of defenders and poked the ball between the goalkeeper's legs before Charlotte Worsman ensured the ball crossed the line.

After the break, player-of-the-match Fay Chapman crossed the ball into the D where Kelly Hunter swept the ball in.

Chapman then had a shot saved but Alice Birchall flicked the rebound into the bottom corner and she was the architect again another cross for Hunter to convert.

York ladies III remain undefeated in division one but threw away a 2-0 lead to share the spoils with Driffield II.

The first short corner saw Jo Perryman's strike bounce off the backboard for the opening goal.

A superb pass from Emily Cooper, on the run, also led to a shot from Sarah Holmes with the resulting ricocheting in the D allowing Rebecca Kearney to double her side's lead before Driffield fought back after the interval.

York ladies IV secured their first win of the season by hammering Horsforth 6-0 with Rachel Witherick (two), Abbie Lovatt (two), Gemma Wray and Wendy Harrington on target.

Keeper Carla Dora Metcalfe also produced several amazing saves.

In division five north, York ladies V gave captain Zoe Searson and sweeper Sarah Davies great birthday presents following 1 3-1 triumph at Northallerton II.

Lauren Susnjara cancelled out Northallerton's opening goal and a Lucy Jones brace wrapped up the points with junior pair Lauren Morton and Lucy Jones sharing the player-of-the-match honours.

Elsewhere, York Badgers claimed their first Development League victory of the season, defeating Airedale 5-1.

A good interchange of passes between Jack Allerton and Zack Pierson saw the latter open the scoring from close range.

Rob Bradley-Consitt and Cameron Mackay added further goals before Airedale got on the scoresheet.

An audacious flick over the goalkeeper saw Mackay grab a second goal from a short corner and Pierson went on to complete the scoring.

Acomb were narrowly beaten in a seven-goal Yorkshire League division three clash at Halifax 2 despite taking a second-minute lead when man-of-the-match Carl Brindley found an unmarked Nick Linfoot who drove sweetly past the home keeper.

Halifax the equalised from close range only for a Matt Dickenson penalty corner goal to nudge the Tangerines back in front.

But the home side were level again on the stroke of half-time when David Brown prevented a shot on goal and the resultant penalty stroke was converted.

After Halifax had gone 3-2 up, Dave Richardson replied for Acomb but, despite making several fine saves, visiting keeper Craig Brown was unable to prevent Halifax’s winning goal when a cross from the right flew off a stick and the home striker deflected into the net.

Acomb 2 went down 4-2 at home to Halifax 3 with Andy Smith and Jonny Brown getting their team's consolation efforts.
