POPPLETON pair Nick Turnbull and Nikki Rohlfing ended their tremendous season by winning the Stuart Robertson Memorial Trophy men's doubles competition at Wigginton.

The annual event caps the men’s tennis season and crowns the best pair from the Tyke Petroleum Men’s League.

A total of 17 pairs from seven of the top men’s league clubs entered the competition this year, sponsored for the first time by Cooper BMW at Malton.

After an initial group stage, Turnbull and Rohlfing overcame Wigginton’s Ben Walker and Phil Langley 6-2 in their semi-final.

Last year’s winners James Denmark and Steve Spaven, from Rowntree Park, won through to the final again, also by 6-2 over Ben Storey and Ben Orton – a joint Wigginton/David Lloyd entry.

A single break was enough for Turnbull and Rohlfing to narrowly win a closely-contested final against Denmark and Spaven, claiming the Stuart Robertson Trophy and the prize of a weekend’s free use of the BMW.

In the league, totalling 107 points after a final win at Starbeck in division one, York clinched third place, having finished runners-up last with two points fewer.

Copmanthorpe signed off with aplomb at Wetherby 2 to finish second in division two above Bubwith.

Andy Cuttill and Alan Bradshaw, of Heworth 2, were the season’s final top guns with an unbeatable 3-32 at Wigginton 4.

Next season's men’s league will expand from just four levels to five, so the starting grid positions for 2016 are best viewed on the league website at http://www.tyke-mens.btck.co.uk/2016Seasonline-up

The men’s league's annual general meeting and presentation evening will be held on Tuesday, November 10 at The Poppleton Centre adjacent to Poppleton Tennis Club, starting at 7:30pm.

It will also mark the league's 35th-year anniversary.
