YORK City boss Russ Wilcox is hoping an impressive 2-0 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy over Doncaster will bring a “feelgood factor” back to Bootham Crescent.

Vadaine Oliver netted twice to send City through to the Northern Area quarter-finals and give the hosts their first win in six matches.

City will now find out who their next opponents in the competition will be during Saturday’s draw with Wilcox targeting another home tie.

The Minstermen chief said: “We’ve knocked two League One teams out of competitions this season and there’s some big sides left in this tournament. There’s a bit of excitement now waiting for the draw and I would like another home tie but the most important thing was to get back to winning ways and bring a feelgood factor back into the club again.

“I’m very pleased to get a win and a clean sheet against a good Doncaster side who had nine players from the team that beat Barnsley at the weekend and we showed terrific composure on the ball at times as well.”

Commenting on the display of Oliver, who was returning from a three-match ban, Wilcox added: “It was great to see Vadaine come back firing. They were two really good goals.

“The first one was a great cross from Anthony Straker but Vadaine still had a lot of work to do to head it in. The second one he closed down well and got his rewards after lifting it over the keeper with composure and putting it into the net.”

Straker, who has started the last two games, having previously failed to make the first XI for more than a year was also praised by Wilcox.

“He was desperate to get an opportunity and he’s done really well,” the City boss enthused. “He worked really hard when we change to 4-3-3 to put pressure on their centre halves.

Michael Coulson, meanwhile, kicked off his second game in four days following groin surgery and is expected to feature again at Luton on Saturday “We will be resting up and training him lightly so he can get his fitness back in games,” Wilcox explained.

“I need my best players out there on the pitch to give us the best chance to win football matches.”
