JOHN WELLS really likes odd numbers when it comes to the Forest Park Trophy.

The Snainton pro produced a seven under par 64 to win the Yorkshire PGA event at the Stockton-on-the-Forest course - the second time in three years he has got his hands on the prized silverware.

Wells shot 66 to win two years ago but was sunk by an uncharacteristic 81 in 2014 when he looked to defend. On Monday, though, his game was in superb order and he finished with three birdies in the last four holes to put together a special score.

His 64 would have been a course record but, following the deluge of rain the previous day, the competition was operating under preferred lies.

Wells, who is now looking to rise up the PGA Order of Merit rankings during this week's Manchester Open, said: "I am really pleased. I had a shocker last year. I was going through some swing changes and I was found out.

"The course was in really good condition despite all the rain and it was one of those rounds that just sneaks up on you. I started well, had a wobble in the middle but saved pars, and then birdied three of the last four."

The trophy has now resided in the hands of Snainton professionals for the last three years, with Wells' colleague Alex Belt taking victory 12 months ago. "It has got its own little place," added Wells of the cabinet in the Snainton Golf Centre where it resides.

"I have made an effort to practice a lot more this year and it has started to pay dividends. I am really happy. It is my third win this year and I have had a lot of top three and four finishes. The consistency is coming back that I didn't have last year and it is nice to have a bit of form."

The Forest Park Trophy was staged for the first time this year over one-day with the professionals competing for main honours alongside a pro-am tournament and course professional Mark Winterburn said the changes were very well received.

"We had 34 teams which was an excellent turnout," he said. "The new format worked well and the course was superb. It was given brilliant comments from lots of people who played. John has had a love-hate relationship with Forest Park - shooting 66 to win it and then 81 last year. But Snainton do very well and they keep the trophy in the cabinet there."
