JASON Gillespie has praised all-rounder Rich Pyrah for recovering from his Twenty20 omission to contribute to Yorkshire's win over Leicestershire in the Royal London Cup win on Monday.

Gillespie says the way Pyrah has dealt with a difficult situation has been "brilliant", having been dropped following 1-52 from three overs during the T20 defeat against Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old, Yorkshire's beneficiary for 2015, has been one of the county's most consistent limited-overs performances in recent years but has struggled this season.

He only claimed seven wickets in ten T20 Blast matches with an economy rate of 7.38 runs per over. At Headingley on Monday, Pyrah went wicketless but returned an important 0-21 from six overs in defence of 278.

Ahead of today's 50-over clash with Somerset at Scarborough, coach Gillespie explained: "During the T20s, Richie didn't perform to the level we expect.

"We have a number of all-rounders and we felt there was an opportunity to give Will Rhodes a go. They are vying for a similar spot. Sometimes, you just have to go with your judgement.

"The reality is that we just haven't been successful in short-form cricket.

"You've got to find a balance between winning today and planning for the future. I suppose, in a way, that situation is a good example of that. Sometimes you have to make the decisions you think are the best.

"We've then had a couple of injury niggles and Richie came back into the squad and did really well against Leicestershire with the ball and in the field.

"Richie's been brilliant. We explained exactly why. We thought we'd give someone else a go. It was after the Old Trafford T20 where we decided to make a couple of changes to our squad and he was left out.

"We've been giving a lads an opportunity. Ryan Gibson's played a couple of games, Matthew Waite a couple of games. Will has also played a fair bit of cricket this summer and we feel he's done well."

Yorkshire are bidding for a fifth Group A win from their seventh match today, a haul which would seal a place in the quarter-finals for the second year in succession.

Somerset have lost four of their five so far, having underachieved in limited-overs cricket this season.

They failed to reach the quarter-finals of the T20 Blast, despite employing West Indian superstar Chris Gayle for a portion of that campaign.

Gillespie said: "They're a very good side and we certainly won't underestimate them in any way shape or form. They've got some big hitters, fast bowlers and some canny cricketers.

"We know we're facing a big task but hopefully we can put in another good performance and give ourselves the best chance of winning. That would be fantastic."

The last time these two sides met at Scarborough in a one-day match in 2007, Gillespie took three wickets as Yorkshire's overseas player in a win.

Gillespie, meanwhile, expects Gary Ballance (hamstring) and Jack Brooks (back) to be fit for the County Championship match against Durham at Scarborough starting on Friday.

Andrew Gale has returned to the squad for today's clash, having missed the last three matches due to a wrist injury, although he is only in as cover and is unlikely to play.
