JAKE Hyde and Michael Coulson are expected to get their boots on for the first time in pre-season this afternoon.

The attacking duo have played no part in the Minstermen's seven friendlies but are pencilled in to feature in a behind-closed-doors clash with Doncaster Rovers today.

Hyde and Coulson have recovered from their respective calf and heel injuries and City chief Russ Wilcox is keen to see them back in the fold with fellow forward Emile Sinclair still sidelined by a thigh problem.

The City boss said: “Jake Hyde and Michael Coulson did some tough work before the Halifax game with John Schofield and Richard Cresswell. They are getting up to speed and are almost ready to perform.

“Fingers crossed, they will play some part against Doncaster and then we will assess them from there.”

With Hyde, Coulson and Sinclair all absent, first-year professional Callum Rzonca started in attack at Halifax, but Wilcox is unlikely to throw the teenager straight into the first XI when City kick off their Sky Bet League Two campaign at Wycombe on Saturday.

“That would probably be expecting too much," he reasoned. “But Callum has had a terrific pre-season and played more minutes than he would have expected, without a doubt, and also in different positions and roles.

"That’s great for his development and the same applies to Ben Godfrey.”

City skipper Russell Penn will travel to Wycombe after being rested against Halifax due to a couple of niggles.

Michael Ingham was not risked for that game either after feeling tightness in his thigh muscle but should return to the squad at Adams Park.

Right-back Marvin McCoy, meanwhile, is a strong contender to face his former club despite being transfer-listed at the end of last term.

McCoy has started all but the first of City’s friendlies and also emerged as the surprise two-goal top scorer during pre-season with Wilcox revealing that he would not now welcome any inquiries for the Antigua & Barbuda international.

“If somebody knocked on my door at the moment asking to sign Marvin, I’d probably say no because he’s come back after the summer with the bit between his teeth and is hungry to do well for York City," the Minstermen chief explained. "While that is the case, he will remain a York City player.

“He’s started most of the games in pre-season and has done well. His two goals have also been a bonus for him.

“He didn’t quite have the energy against Halifax that he’s shown in other games, but we had players out there who have played three and even four games in a week and, hopefully, that will benefit us at Wycombe.”
