A TEAM heart-to-heart might help in-form York Cricket Club bag their first trophy of the campaign this weekend.

The Clifton Parkers, who after a rocky start are now in blistering form, go to Town Fields in Doncaster on Sunday for the finals of the Solly Sports Yorkshire League's T20 competition - where their confidence will be tested by a side skipper Nick Kay believes is the best in the league.

York meet title-hunting Barnsley in the last four with the victors going through to meet either Harrogate or Cleethorpes in the final.

The Shipton Road side will arrive with confidence - having won every match since a surprising defeat to Hull at the start of last month - and Kay believes hard words in the dressing room following that loss has paved the way for their revival.

"I think it is fair to say that after the Hull game - which was a low point for many of us - we did have a strong conversation among ourselves," he said. "We realised what we were doing wasn't good enough for the first team at York.

"The good thing is that everyone has responded really well to that. People have started to take a bit more responsibility for their own performance and they are not leaving it up to other guys. Some of the younger players have really stepped up.

"Charlie Elliot's bowling has come on leaps and bounds and Adam Whatley is really starting to perform as our overseas player. Simon Lambert and Ryan McKendry - as all-rounders - are head and shoulders above most of the competition.

"Our important players have found form. We are playing good cricket as an 11 and out match-winners are winning us matches."

York will be familiar with Town Fields having played and won twice there this season and Kay believes that experience can help his side. He added: "It is certainly a place we have got experience at. We have won both games there.

"We are really looking forward to Sunday. Barnsley are probably the best team in the league at the moment. They are a terrific side and have a good group of coaches. We know we will have to be at our best.

"It's a one-off game and anything can happen. They were close games in the league and they have beaten us twice but our T20 side has got good balance to it with some seam and spin.

"We bat down to number 11 and there is a lot to say about that. I am excited that we are going to do well."

First up for York is a trip to Castleford in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League.

"Castleford have been the most improved team in the league over the last two years," said Kay. "They are a group of young players who have come through with one or two experienced heads. They are just below us in the league and they will give us a very tough game.

"They got a very good result against Yorkshire Academy last weekend and they have a big pitch. If David Wainwright (former Yorkshire off-spinner now employed by Derbyshire) is playing, we will have to be at our best. We shouldn't fear anyone, though, and we can go in with a lot of confidence."

York will be employing a full-strength side on both days with the exception of Adam Whatley, who can't play in the T20 match-up. Kieron Ploor, who has been starring for the club's second string and Under-19s T20 outfit, will get his chance to shine.
