YORK City Rowing Club placed seventh from almost 100 clubs after winning 14 medals at the British Masters Championships.

The Lendal Bridge-based team enjoyed a haul of seven golds, four silvers and three bronze in the Victor Ludorum, which was the club's best-ever result in the competition by a long margin.

Leading the way on day one were Anne Homa and Jon Suchomski, both of whom won gold in the WD single (over 50) and C (Over 43) novice single sculls respectively.

Other opening day podium finishes, meanwhile, were recorded by Margit Rezacova (silver) and Weike Avis (bronze) in the WA singles.

An excellent day two then saw Hugh Dawick take bronze in the D intermediate single sculls before Martin Walsh struck gold in the E (over 55) intermediate single sculls and then teamed up with Neil Paveley, Michael Porte, Dawick and cox Robyn Inglis to convincingly win the D intermediate coxed four.

The younger C (43) coxed four of Iain Edmondson, Phil Press, Gavin Campbell, Mick Homa and Inglis went on to finish champions too after a tough battle.

Hilary Howe and Paula Widdowson joined the gold rush in the WD intermediate double sculls, along with Hudson Aschmann and Nick Wilson, who clinched a thrilling men’s intermediate doubles victory by just 0.1 seconds.

Bronze also went to WD coxless pair Karen Williams and Philippa Press and Paul Baron collected silver in the B intermediate singles, as did the D coxed 4+ of Pete Rigby, Homa, Edmondson, Dave Turley and Inglis.

The day was rounded off by a tough, determined row by the WC 8 of Anne Homa, Ali Stevens, Philippa Press, Karen Williams, Jo Brehaut, Liz Porte, Rezacova, Anna Heathcote and cox Steph Gant to clinch bronze.

On the club's historic display, a delighted Phil Press, co-ordinator of the men’s veteran squad, said: “It’s been an amazing regatta for us. Crews have rowed their socks off with some truly outstanding results and it’s given us a huge boost as we prepare for the World Masters Championships in Belgium in September.”

Meanwhile,fFormer York City Rowing Club ace Tom Ransley suffered World Cup disappointment in Italy.

Ransley and team-mates Alan Sinclair, Nathaniel Reilly-O'Donnell and Scott Durant could not build on their European Championship victory last month as they finished fifth behind crews from USA, Italy, Canada and Australia in the coxless four class at Varese.
