MIDFIELDER James Berrett has promised York City supporters the best is yet to come as he looks to help York City climb the League Two ladder.

The 26-year-old former Yeovil schemer was unveiled, along with ex-Hartlepool goalkeeper Scott Flinders, at Bootham Crescent as manager Russ Wilcox completed a double swoop in the transfer market.

Berrett, whose capture was revealed by The Press last week, has agreed terms on a two-year deal after being offered a termination of his contract with the relegated Glovers.

He had endured a troubled campaign at Huish Park - missing pre-season with injury before suffering a stop-start campaign which brought 32 appearances and where the club was relegated to League Two.

But the former Republic of Ireland under-21 international is confident of getting back to the form that saw him score ten goals in his first two seasons at Carlisle and 27 in total in four years with the Cumbrians.

"I feel like I have still got the best to come," Berrett explained. "The last couple of years my form has maybe dipped but I think I have definitely got the best to show and I am looking forward to proving some people wrong and getting back to the level I can play at."

On his move to City, he added: "I am delighted and just looking forward to starting. I heard about it a couple of weeks ago, just before I was going away on holiday. I am happy to get it all done. I have spoken to the manager and the chairman and both seem really ambitious.

"Last year was disappointing for me so I wanted to get back up north and start enjoying my football again, which is something I didn't do last year. This is a great opportunity for me and I just want to get back playing and enjoying it. This is a good place for me to come."

He continued: "It wasn't nice (last season at Yeovil). I was injured at the beginning and didn't start really well. I was always playing catch-up and I was in and out of the team so it was difficult. I am putting that behind me now and am looking forward to playing for York City."

The former Huddersfield youngster, who has recently got married, has high hopes for his time with the Minstermen arguing that the difficulties of last season's league campaign, where they were involved in a relegation battle, could yet spur the club on to greater heights.

He said: "We have to look at the top half and pushing for the play-offs. You have always got to aim high and the play-offs are something you should aim for. Other teams have done it where they have struggled the year before and the next year they have gone and got into the play-offs. Hopefully we can do the same.

"You have always got to push yourself - as an individual and as a team. I am looking forward to coming back into pre-season, getting into it and meeting all the lads."
