YORK City first-team coach Richard Cresswell has been tasked with spotting new talent for the senior squad and academy.

The Minstermen have confirmed that Cresswell will continue to be a member of manager Russ Wilcox’s backroom staff next season but his role will also now encompass recruitment responsibilities.

The 37-year-old former forward was promoted into the first-team fold two months ago by manager Russ Wilcox and, on the training ground, he will work primarily with the club’s strikers during 2015/16.

But, away from Bootham Crescent, Cresswell, who went on to play in all four top professional divisions in the country having won England under-21 caps whilst on the Minstermen’s books, will watch matches at all levels of the game in an attempt to ensure the highest quality of player is brought into the club for both the first team and academy.

On extending his working relationship with Cresswell, Minstermen chief Wilcox said: “I’m delighted to retain Richard as part of my backroom team and he is going to play a big role for us this season.

“I want Richard to put all of his experience into the strikers at the club and the offensive side of our game because it is important that we score more goals. On the other side of his role, recruitment is vitally important just as it is for the rest of the staff to keep our eyes peeled for new players.

“With Richard being a first-team coach he will be primarily on the training ground working with the squad but then, on certain days, when there are reserve team and under-21s games taking place, it will provide an opportunity for him to keep an eye out for potential targets. It’s great that he’s staying on board with us and I’m really excited with the coaching team I’ve been able to put together, which will hopefully benefit everyone at the football club.”
