YORK golf ace Simon Dyson has taken a gamble on retrieving his imperilled European Tour campaign.

After a consultation with one of the UK's leading surgeons, Dyson has had a cortisone injection rather than major surgery to try to get back playing as soon as possible.

Dyson was offered either surgery straightaway or the cortisone option after the medical consultation he had on Monday when he also underwent an MRI scan near his home base in Manchester.

The medical was arranged after his troublesome tendon injury in his left wrist resurfaced in the Spanish pen, near Barcelona last week - his first competitive action after a near two-month enforced break.

The 38-year-old Dyson negotiated the first round at the Real Club de Golf El Prat course, a challenging top 20 position evaporating after 15 holes when he suddenly dropped three shots in only two holes.

The damaged hand stood up to a mere four holes in the second round, by which time he had ceded another five shots prompting his withdrawal and a return home.

Rather than undergo surgery which would force him to be sidelined for anything between six and 12 months, Dyson had the cortisone injection.

The effects require several days to settle down, so Dyson will miss tomorrow's BMW PGA tournament at Wentworth, instead scheduled to return to the next European Tour event - the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, which starts at the Royal County Down GC in Newcastle on Thursday, May 28.

If the wrist holds up he will likely continue playing throughout the summer. If not then Dyson will undergo surgery.

Presently Dyson is 191st in the world rankings and falling seven places after his ill-starred Spanish Open assault, while he is 181st position, in the Race To Dubai standings, the European Tour's climax in November open to the leading 60 players.
