POPPLETON started the defence of their IT Sports Mixed Tennis League division one title with two big wins.

Brother and sister Nick and Rebecca Turnbull won 33 games in the matches against Wigginton 1 and York 2, receiving good support from the unbeaten Jack Hannah and Catherine Baker.

Gareth Adams and Becky Lee won an impressive 32 games for York 1 against a strong Fulford side.

Only Fulford and York are still unbeaten in division two.

Fulford were pushed all the way at Bishopthorpe, with Nigel Skelton and Pauline Craddock finishing with a 10-2 success to seal the win.

John Anderson and Sue Peach won 25 games for Poppleton, but ended up on the losing side against David Lloyd, for whom Paul Chappel and Kath Jackson were unbeaten.

Max Los and Lucy Collier led Sutton-on-Derwent to another win in division three against Appleton Roebuck to stay ahead of Bubwith.

Daryl Young and Jill Rounce were unbeaten for Bubwith in a close encounter at Sherburn, while James Todd and Karen Mitchell won 30 games for Dunnington in their opening fixture at Appleton Roebuck.

Division four is led by Dunnington after their match at York, with the hosts unable to beat Alfie Hubble and Sue Sumner.

Behind on games difference are Copmanthorpe after a comfortable win against David Lloyd, thanks to first pair Johnnie Kay and Maggie Zhang winning 28 games.

Wilberfoss are the only other unbeaten side, but were made to fight all the way against a Poppleton side led by the unbeaten Neil Johnson and Sue Pauer.

Only York and Wetherby Castlegarth are undefeated in division five.

York won by two games at Cawood, with victory assured by Jack Lewis and Jill La Pla.

Wetherby had an easier win at Fulford, Ollie Boyes-Park and Rachel Butterworth top-scoring.

Mark Baxter and Sara Heron won 26 games for Appleton Roebuck as they opened their account against Wigginton.

Rowntree Park head division six with Rufforth after a comfortable win against Tollerton, spearheaded by Kevin Davison and Sandra Pauw.

Rufforth were pushed all the way by Poppleton, with Dan Russell and Kate Lewis top-scoring. None of Rufforth’s pairings could beat Edwin Knighton and Fiona Smith.

Alne have won their opening two games. Against Tollerton, they were unable to beat Josh Hunt and Ellen Strabel, but a two-game victory against Wilberfoss was sealed with an 11-1 victory in the final round by Helen Macdonald and Matt Pearson.
