MANY questions need answering about Leeds United’s future before their players report back for training on July 1.

Club president Massimo Cellino, the central character who could solve the never-ending Elland Road drama, has major decisions to make.

The Italian’s ban from the club following his tax conviction expired yesterday and he must decide whether to renew head coach Neil Redfearn’s contract, which expires in June.

Although they had not seen a home win since early March, United supporters turned out in force on Saturday as Elland Road’s biggest crowd of the season witnessed a 0-0 final day draw with Rotherham United.

Many of those 31,850 fans boomed out their support for Redfearn who hopes to hold talks with Cellino this week in a bid to secure his future at the club.

Redfearn said “We’re free now obviously to discuss things and talk about stuff, so I would expect we’ll sit down and chat. The important part now becomes the recruitment part and if I’m going to be here I’d like to be part of that.”

The reinstatement of assistant Steve Thompson, who was suspended without explanation last month, could be key to Redfearn’s future. Should Thompson not be allowed back, the odds on Redfearn staying as head coach will be cut dramatically.

The pair dug Leeds out of major hole as the Whites looked likely to be involved in a relegation struggle in January – yet Cellino may not see it that way.

Saturday’s low-key game was an anti-climax with both sides struggling to find a breakthrough in the final third. It extended United’s run to five at home without a win with just one goal scored in that sequence but Redfearn still has strong fan backing.

Millers boss Steve Evans stuck to his promise to turn up in beachwear if he kept his side in the Championship, sporting sombrero, shorts, flip-flops and sunglasses as he got off the visitors’ coach.

The hierarchy at Leeds can’t afford much beach time this summer as there is a huge amount of work to bring the club much-needed stability.
