TOM RICHARDS netted the winner as Dunnington beat Old Malton St Mary’s 1-0 in the final of the York FA Saturday Senior Cup.

There was nothing between the York Minster Engineering Football League premier division rivals in the first half-hour of the Stoneplan Landscape Construction-sponsored final at Tockwith.

Dunnington stepped up a gear after that and, on 38 minutes, a through ball from Jonny Andrew was slotted home by Richards.

Oliver Newby’s near post shot almost doubled Dunnington’s tally but stand-in Old Malton keeper Simon Cooke saved well. After the break, Old Malton created more chances, with Callum Scott heading over the Dunnington bar and Tom Fenwick seeing his one-on-one effort blocked by keeper Dave Bailey.

On 67 minutes, Old Malton’s Darren Dunning hit the crossbar with a 30-yard free-kick and Rob Baker fired over the bar from 15 yards ten minutes later. Dunnington held firm and when Old Malton’s Fenwick was dismissed on 89 minutes there was no way back for the Ryedale side.

Dave Morrill, chairman of the York FA, presented the trophy to Dunnington, who completed a rare York FA Saturday Junior and Senior Cup double following their reserve side’s Junior Cup triumph over Kirkbymoorside.
