NORTH Yorkshire trainer John Quinn, dealt a sickening blow by the untimely setback suffered by The Wow Signal, who misses tomorrow’s Qipco 2,000 Guineas, will be seeking much smaller rewards at Musselburgh this afternoon.

Quinn saddles Arthurs Secret in the Investec Wealth And Investment May Handicap and the mount of Phil Makin is fancied to take all the beating.

A winner over hurdles on this course in February, Arthurs Secret finished a respectable fourth to Eltheeb over a mile and a half on the Flat at Newcastle a couple of weeks ago.

The step up to one mile and three-quarters today will be in the gelding’s favour and he is selected to defy top weight.

As for The Wow Signal, who won at Group 1 and Group 2 level last season when he was among the top two-year-olds, he is being assessed after sustaining an injury and his future programme remains uncertain.

David O’Meara, who runs Hail The Hero in tomorrow’s Newmarket Classic, can hit the Musselburgh target with Regal Dan in the Weatherbys Bank Handicap.

The five-year-old went down narrowly to stablemate Al Khan at Catterick recently.

The winner has since scored again at Ayr, so the form looks solid enough. Regal Dan should have benefited from that outing and is taken to go one better. He carries the nap vote.

O’Meara can also win the Stats Group British Stallion Studs Maiden Stakes with Halsall.

The youngster showed plenty of dash and looked a likely winner entering the closing stages on his debut at Beverley only to be nailed near the finish by Taking Liberty’s. This fast track should play to his strengths.

Tim Easterby, who fields an interesting newcomer, Copacobana, against Halsall, can score with Penny Royale in the Baillie Gifford Handicap.

David Allan’s mount should be all the better for a comeback outing at Redcar when fifth to Normandy Barriere, who has won again since. This drop back to five furlongs from six should not inconvenience Penny Royale, who should make a bold bid.

Easterby also has sound prospects with Soul Brother, who ran better than his finishing position of ninth might suggest on his comeback outing at Ripon. He turns out again in the Weatherbys Private Banking Handicap.

Bryan Smart brings Smalljohn out quickly in the Bruce Stevenson Insurance Brokers Handicap, which is perfectly understandable.

The gelding won an apprentice race under Rachel Richardson at Catterick last week and escapes a penalty in this race.

Adam Carter takes the ride and will have to be at his sharpest to overcome a poor draw on Smalljohn, who is proven over course-and-distance.

At Chepstow, Malton jockey Jason Hart makes the long journey to continue his association with Udododontu in the Truvape Handicap.

Trained by Richard Guest, the three-year-old made a winning reappearance at Redcar three weeks ago, beating Mother’s Finest, who has since won at Haydock.

Guest made no secret of the fact how highly he rates Udododontu after that Redcar success and off an opening handicap mark of 77, he makes plenty of appeal.

Perrault should be hard to beat in the Alan Bushell Racing Maiden Stakes.

The colt, trained by Ralph Beckett, made a good impression on his only start last season when runner-up in a Newbury maiden in October. He is entitled to go well here under Richard Kingscote.

Musselburgh today: 1.50 Halsall, 2.20 Argaki, 2.55 Soul Brother, 3.25 Arthurs Secret, 4.00 Regal Dan (NAP) 4.35 Penny Royale, 5.10 Smalljohn.

Chepstow today: 1.40 Thunder Pass, 2.10 Grace And Favour, 2.45 Perrault, 3.15 Midnight Rider, 3.50 Udododontu, 4.25 Newholm, 5.00 Four Nations.
