NEWLY-PROMOTED Acomb top the Hunters York & District Senior Cricket League premier division after their match against Beverley was the only one to beat the weather.

Andrew Brewster, who joined the club from Bolton Percy in the off-season, took four wickets for a second successive match, ending with figures of 4-16 as the visitors were all out for 74.

It took the new leaders only 16.3 overs to chase down their modest victory target, Harry Booth leading the way with an unbeaten 37.

Skipper Steve Burdett made sure defending champions Woodhouse Grange picked up maximum bowling points, taking 5-25 against Clifton Alliance. Despite 48 from Alex Renton, Alliance were bowled out for 154.

The visitors’ reply lasted two overs before the game was abandoned.

Sheriff Hutton Bridge made 216-9 at home to Heworth, skipper Adam Fisher adding to the previous week’s half-century with 45 and receiving support from Mark Fisher, who made 40. Richard Walton’s four wickets kept the visitors in the game, but the rain arrived early in their reply.

Jonathon Moxon (128) produced the highest individual innings of the season to date as, despite five wickets from Jake Murphy, returning to Clifton Park with new club Dunnington, York II scored 268-8.

Sam Beales contributed 48 as the home side recovered from 17-2.

The visitors reached 39-0 in reply.

Mark Mierzwinski (102) was the day’s other centurion and his opening stand of 139 with Stephen Piercy (63) laid the foundation for Easingwold’s total of 258-4 against Scarborough, whose Matthew Wilson took all four wickets.

Stamford Bridge posted the day’s highest total of 272-6 against Fenner.

Sam Tennant (57), Kevin Murphy (49no) and Dom Rhodes (47) all contributed to ensure their side claimed maximum batting points before the match was curtailed with Fenner on 23-0.

Only 36 overs were possible between Studley Royal and Hull Zingari. Dan Craven (59no) and Rob Nicholson (51) helped the home side to 155-4.

Dampener for second tier

THE Hunters York & District Senior Cricket League division one season got off to a damp start as the majority of the opening round of fixtures were ruined by the weather.

Osbaldwick’s Matthew Hattee (84) was the division’s top run scorer and Matthew Senior added an unbeaten half-century as the division two north champions scored 175-4 before rain brought a premature end to the match at Bridlington.

Folkton & Flixton made 200-7 at Malton & Old Malton with Jamie Nesfield (42), Harry Walmsley (40) and Robert Lacey (40) all making positive starts to their season.

Simon Mason made an impressive start for Sessay top-scoring with 69 but his efforts, and those of Matthew Till (59), proved in vain.

Despite posting 267-4 from 43 overs, the home side had to settle for a share of the points when the rain arrived, but not before Tom Atkinson (47no) had steered Bolton Percy to 63-0.

Relegated Sewerby, looking to make an immediate return to the top flight, began in the best possible way, Lewis Beasley (74) leading them to a three-wicket win at home to Whitkirk. Simon Webb (76) scored the bulk of the visitors’ total of 163 all out, as Adrian Long marked his debut with 3-16.

Goole Town took advantage of Pickering’s sporting declaration to make a winning start at Carr Lane.

Tom Sigsworth (31), Mark Shepherd (26) and Isaac Christopher (25) all contributed to a Pikes total of 133-7 from 36 overs.

But the visitors were left to rue their decision when Ashton Nottingham (43) and Neil Foster (31) helped the home side race to victory inside 21 overs.

Only 31 overs were possible in the match between Driffield Town II and Beverley Town II. Ben Dobson made 45 of the home side’s 121-6.
