YORK City boss Russ Wilcox has admitted that a couple of players’ Bootham Crescent futures remain in the balance prior to the final two games of the season.

Michael Ingham, Tom Platt and Lewis Montrose are all out of contract this summer, along with injured duo Wes Fletcher (hamstring) and Josh Carson (concussion) and loaned-out pair Dan Parslow and Ryan Jarvis.

The Minstermen chief has already insisted he will not be discussing his retained list until after this weekend’s home meeting with Newport and the season-ending trip to Portsmouth seven days later.

But there are certain players who can still sway him one way or the other before their current deals with the Minstermen lapse.

“I know roughly where I want to go and what I want to do, but that must remain under wraps,” Wilcox said of his personnel plans for next season.

“I’m still undecided on a couple and it’s difficult because the reason we have got over the line is that the whole squad of 18 or 19 players have stuck together and played a part, whether that’s been in a couple of games or nearly the whole 46.”

Ninth-placed Newport have seen their play-off hopes hijacked somewhat by a run of four straight defeats.

But the Welsh side remain three points adrift of a place in the top seven and Wilcox believes their need for a victory should ensure an attractive spectacle during Bootham Crescent’s final contest of 2014/15.

“They have an outside chance of the play-offs, which adds a bit of spice to the game because they have got to try and win their last two matches,” the City manager reasoned. “It should be pretty open and entertaining because of that.

“They haven’t won for five games but have had some difficult fixtures and they’re at the top end of the table because they’re a good outfit.”

Wilcox also reckons reproducing the form his players showed during last Saturday’s unfortunate 1-0 defeat at title hopefuls Shrewsbury will hold the key to the Minstermen racking up four consecutive home wins for the first time in four years.

He added: “I was delighted with our performance and disappointed with the outcome at Shrewsbury but we know that we will pick up more points in our last two games if we keep playing like that.

"I think getting safe has given the players a bit more freedom and, now that the shackles are off, we are trying to play the way I want us to play.

“Hopefully, we can do that at home now because winning our last four matches at Bootham Crescent would give us great impetus and belief in everybody’s bellies going into next season.

“Nobody would have thought we could go out on such a high at home a couple of weeks ago.”

Wilcox is also hoping his team can sign off at Bootham Crescent in goalscoring fashion.

Sheffield Wednesday are the only side in the entire Football League to have netted fewer times on their own soil than the 16 goals City have managed and Wilcox now wants to reward the club’s supporters for their loyalty, saying: “The fans have played a huge part in what we’ve done this season.

“It’s easy to jump on players’ backs and make life difficult for your team but they’ve helped us get over the line through a sticky period. We’ve not scored enough goals at home all season - we know that.

“We are the lowest scorers at home in the division and the fourth-highest away and, while I would sooner win 1-0 than lose 3-2, it would be great to get some goals against Newport in our last home match.”
