YORKSHIRE are confident they can build on last summer’s four-day title success and avoid being “one hit wonders”, according to Martyn Moxon.

Director of cricket Moxon and company kick off the new LV= County Championship campaign against newly Worcestershire at New Road tomorrow, where they will hand a debut to India Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara.

Pujara netted for the first time yesterday ahead of his two-month stay with the county.

A 13-man squad will travel to the Midlands, including Ryan Sidebottom, who was rested from the three-day friendly draw against Leeds/Bradford MCCU and will return to the side.

Captain Andrew Gale will sit out the clash as he ends his ECB ban for improper conduct, with Alex Lees standing in as skipper.

Worcester should include new overseas signing Sachithra Senanayake, the Sri Lankan off-spinner, as well as England all-rounder Moeen Ali.

The latter may only be able to bat as he continues his recovery from the side strain suffered at the World Cup.

“There’s a confidence about the squad, but not an over confidence,” said Moxon.

“We’re under no illusions of the challenge ahead, but the lads believe in themselves and in each other.

“We’re fully aware that it’s going to be tough to repeat the success of last year, and we’re going to have to play some fantastic cricket. We know we can’t fall below those standards otherwise you’re not going to win it.

“Having experienced it, not only do I want more, the players also want more.

“There is a desire there to repeat the success. We’re all determined not to be one-hit wonders, which we said as a group in September.

“We don’t want to be a one-success team or squad. That’s our aim.”

It has been well documented how tough the start of the season is going to be for Yorkshire without six England players for the first three matches, including two against last season’s nearest challengers Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire.

And Moxon believes that if they are lifting the Championship trophy again come the end of September, it will be a better achievement than winning it last year was.

“We had a reasonably settled team last year, the core of the team remained largely unchanged,” added Moxon.

“If we have to draw on the whole squad and are still successful, that will be an even better achievement, absolutely.”
