STEFAN King, the millionaire leisure magnate, yesterday lost out on his bid to muscle in on a rival's territory.

His G1 Group had sought an entertainment licence for a pavement eatery on the raised plinth of the Gallery of Modern Art in Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow.

However, it covered an area used for six years by Di Maggio's, the Italian restaurant chain, whose consent for outdoor seating runs until December 2007.

The city's licensing board agreed only to issue a licence directly in front of the Social, Mr King's new cafe bar, which stands outwith the plinth.

Members further stressed that future applications for al fresco dining must include the exact address, and a map of proposed sites.

Also yesterday, the licensing board gave the go-ahead to Saltire Taverns for a (pounds) 2m Frankenstein's theme bar nightclub in West George Street.
