ACOMB ‘A’ maintained their five-point lead at the top of the York Conservative Clubs’ Carlsberg UK Snooker League as they won the last two frames to defeat Fulford ‘A’ 4-3.

The first frame went to Fulford as Andy Marshall crushed Roland Cox, hitting a 30 break followed by a 65, the second highest of the season, in an impressive victory.

On the other table, Acomb’s Dan Potter defeated Glen Mountain with the help of good safety play.

Kevin Thornhill failed to keep his lead in the Pasema Paving player of the season standings as he lost to Fulford’s Jamie Husband.

Nick Marchant had a comfortable win over Fulford’s Sam England, making a 22 break to finish the frame.

Fulford edged 3-2 in front when Alan Reed held off Phil Carlton, finally winning when Carlton missed the black and went in-off.

Paul Holmes defeated Jim Lee to haul Acomb level and then Mick Borg, with an opening 48 break, defeated Sam Wass.

Bootham ‘B’ remain in second place after a 4-3 victory over Heworth ‘B’, despite losing the first two frames as Martin Johnson beat Paul Scorfield and Peter Rivis defeated Ian Robinson.

The Bootham fight back was led by Andy Proud, who beat Ian Strickland, followed by wins for Matt Smith and Paul Mahoney over Simon Whitley and Carl De Pasquale.

Andi Ireland pulled a frame back for Heworth, but Lionel Barnes defeated John Sherlock to secure the win for Bootham.

The home side had wins for Simon Weatherill over Rob Barron, Steve Beal over Steve Carroll, Dominic Spiteri against Tim Fillingham, Roger Ward against Mark Darley and Dan Pawson over Colin Robinson, plus a walkover win.

Heworth’s Neil Wood beat John Adcock but Andy Hurley hit back by beating Nick Dyson.

The final two frames were shared as Jordan Worobec beat Dean Smith and Nigel Smith got the better of Steve Burdett.

The race for the Pasema Paving player of the year award is hotting up as there are now four players level on ten wins, with Thornhill joined by Borg, Proud and Ogley.

Blue is colour for shock conquerors

FIRST-TIME entrants Tom Lewis and Sam Parkinson, of Fulford, beat eight-time winners Clive Whyte and Neil Wood, of Heworth, to win the final of the York Conservative Clubs’ Dave Burdett Pairs Snooker Trophy.

The Fulford pair shocked the Heworth duo by running out 2-0 winners in the final at Acomb.

The first frame saw Lewis, who was the dominant player for Fulford, quickly adding 17 points to the plus-39 handicap start they received.

Whyte replied with nine and Wood with 15 points, which left Fulford 64-35 ahead. Wood added a further 12 points, but Lewis took the last red and the Heworth duo needed all the colours.

They gained yellow and green, but Lewis hit back by taking brown, which left Wood needing a snooker and he could only leave Lewis easy pots on blue and pink to secure the frame.

In the second frame, Wood made breaks of 12, 21 and 11 while Fulford added small scores to lead 57-49 before Lewis made a 12 break, including the yellow and green.

Wood took the brown and, when Parkinson made a mistake, he was left a straightforward blue to middle pocket with both pink and black available.

However, the blue rebounded off the bottom jaw, leaving Lewis an easy blue and pink to win the frame and match.

The trophy and awards were presented by Colin Robinson, chairman of the Faber Shield committee, on behalf of sponsor Steve Burdett.
