WIGGINTON Grasshoppers secured the York Sunday Morning Football League division one title for the first time in their history with a 4-0 win over Hounds.

All three top-flight games were goalless after 45 minutes, but events in the second half in each meant Hounds, Dunnington and Station were no longer able to catch the leaders.

It was an edgy first-half display from Grasshoppers with Chris Jackson firing just wide of a post and having another effort brilliantly saved by Wigginton goalkeeper Michael Clancy.

The second-half was a different story. When Steve Jarvis was brought down in the area after 50 minutes, the winger stepped up and despatched the penalty.

Ten minutes later, club captain Tom Coates, who has been with the Sunday League side since its formation, made use of his second touch since arriving from the bench to fittingly send his club in front.

Two carbon-copy goals followed, with Matthew Tiplady twice providing Terry Taylor, who bagged a brace to seal a 4-0 triumph.

The day’s most unexpected result was at Bubwith White Swan, who produced a sterling second-half performance to defeat Station 3-0.

After an uneventful first period, goals from Tom Robinson, Leon Wood and Ryan Sedman gave White Swan the three points.

Dunnington travelled to Albion Vaults and the sides were all- square at the end of both halves.

The first half saw no goals before a goal spree in the second period produced a 4-4 draw. On target for Vaults were Dave Hullah, Chris Harkin, Adam Durnin and substitute Mike Cussans.

In division two, Marcia Grey moved to within striking distance of York Nomads following victory over Britannia Tadcaster.

A breakaway goal separated the sides at the end of the first half, Tommy Medd rounding the Tad keeper to slot home.

Britannia levelled early in the second period, but then Marcia introduced substitute Alex Day to change the game.

Immediately, Day collected a Paul Harris cross before turning a defender inside out and unleashing a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.

He then outpaced a Britannia defender before slotting the ball into the far corner to make it 3-1 before Leigh Dutton volleyed home a Liam Shepherd free-kick.

Brayton went 1-0 up early on in their game with NUR, but the home side drew level through Danny Cotton’s looping header just after the break.

Ten minutes later, Brayton converted a penalty to make it 2-1, but a point was secured for both sides when James O’Donnell converted after Ben Spencer was felled in the box.

York Phoenix moved up to third in division three after a 4-1 success over Wentworth.

The home side took a fortuitous lead after a mix-up in the Wentworth defence gifted them an own goal and, from then on, Phoenix took control.

Scott Higgs tapped home and Danny Phillips fired in a rocket from 25 yards to make it 3-0 at half-time.

A scrappier second half saw Wentworth pull back a consolation through Dom Green before Ben Low struck to give Phoenix their sixth victory of the season.

Haxby United picked up three points against Selby Olympia courtesy of goals from Richard Wishart, from the penalty spot, Will Plews and Matt Wash.

York Medics and York Wanderers played out a 3-3 draw. Neil Fraser bagged two and Paul Firth one as Wanderers came back from 3-1 down to secure a point.

Nine times able conquest

RESERVE ‘A’ leaders Wigginton Grasshoppers hit Old Malton St Mary’s for nine as they maintained their six-point gap at the top of the York Minster Engineering Football League table.

There were hat-tricks for in-form Dave Hartas and James Sutton, who were supported by goals from Eddy Clapham and Steve Jarvis, plus an own goal.

Malton substitute Shane Marshall scored the goal of the game, hitting a 20-yard screamer into the top corner, but it was scant consolation as his side went down 9-1.

With several games in hand, Dunnington underlined their claim to retain their crown with a 3-2 victory over Huntington Rovers.

Samson Wildwood, Matt Playle and Mike Noble scored for Dunnington, with Kieron Flanagan and Pete Laidlaw finding the net for Rovers.

Dringhouses gained a 5-2 win over Riccall United, for whom Martin Howson bagged a brace.

Copmanthorpe consolidated their position in fifth with a 5-3 triumph over Easingwold. Robin Bedford bagged a hat-trick, with Lewis Chipchase and Mike Revill also netting.

Danny Cates (2), Aaron North and Philip Martin struck for York RI in a 4-1 win over Haxby United. Jonathan Jackson hit back for United.

In reserve ‘B’, James Mason and Brad Robertson were the heroes for Church Fenton White Horse as they moved ever closer to a return to the top flight, beating Pocklington 2-0.

Second-placed Thorpe took a battering at third-placed Harrison Signs, going down 6-0. Cameron Sanderson (2), Neil Richardson and Warren Lowe put the away side 4-0 up at the break before two sublime finishes from Mark Benton wrapped up the game.

Ryan Garbutt, 17, was the star of the show for Heslington as they defeated Hemingbrough 3-1. The youngster picked up the man of the match award and scored two impressive goals, the first from an acute angle and the second a 35-yard blockbuster free-kick.

Gareth Fisher grabbed Heslington’s third.
