ACOMB were crowned York Conservative Clubs’ Faber Shield Billiards League champions with two games left to play as they beat Bootham 5-1.

That proved to be a championship clincher, as rivals Fulford lost 4-2 to Heworth.

Acomb’s victory over Bootham was spearheaded by Dan Potter, who remains unbeaten in his first season playing billiards, winning all seven matches.

Potter beat Colin Robinson 150-57 to give Acomb first blood, and that was followed by Richard Lillie (22 and 33 breaks) defeating Tim Fillingham 150-113.

Trevor Ventress and then Mick Borg added to Acomb’s score with victories over Alf Appleby and Paul Mahoney, but Matt Smith got Bootham a point with a win over Paul Holmes.

Fulford’s hopes of catching Acomb at the top were dashed at Heworth.

Glen Mountain lost 150-92 to Heworth’s Gary Rogers, who compiled the highest break of the season, rattling up 105.

That followed a break of 68 in a top class display of billiards.

Fulford’s Tom Lewis beat Keith Watkinson 150-118, but Mark Winskill was in great form, hitting breaks of 37, 30 and 30 to easily beat Wayne Puleston 150-65.

Terry Ward hit back for Fulford, defeating Brian Birch 150-87, which included an 83 break.

Heworth secured the win when Darren Clark, playing steadily, beat Alan Reed 150-94 in the final frame The Cameo Engraving player of the year competition is a race between three Acomb.

Mick Borg has played ten, won nine, while Paul Holmes has played ten and won seven, and Dan Potter is seven from seven.

Rogers has won seven of his nine matches.

Clubmates collide in final tie

FRED MALLINSON and Mark Robinson were 2-0 winners in York Conservative Clubs’ Paul McCready Memorial Snooker Trophy final.

The climax of the ‘C’ team pairs competition was played at Heworth, with Mallinson and Robinson reversing the result of last year’s final against Colin Richardson and John Sherlock.

The first frame between the Heworth players was a scrappy affair, with both pairs unable to pot a colour after potting reds.

It eventually finished when Mallinson potted the black to secure the frame. The second frame was a more open contest, but superior potting saw Mallinson and Robinson easily win and secure the trophy.

The trophy and prizes were presented by John McCready.
