YORK arrows ace Martyn Turner has been drawn against former Premier League star Wes Newton in the first round of this week’s UK Open.

Turner will take on world number 18 Newton, who reached the final of the competition in 2011, in the first round at Butlins’ Minehead resort.

Whitwell-on-the-Hill’s Terry Temple, meanwhile, has also been handed a tough second- round tie against Australian Kyle Anderson, who reached the last 32 of this year’s World Championship.

Both matches will take place on Friday afternoon with the tournament, widely recognised as the ‘FA Cup of Darts’, being televised live on ITV4.

Gate leap back into top spot

FULFORDGATE shot back into pole position in York John Smith’s Ladies Darts League division one with an 8-1 demolition of Castle Howard Ox ‘B’.

Anne Bass led the way with a 22-dart leg, including scores of 135 and 100, while captain Michelle Britton also hit the tons. They were denied a full house by Sandra Bruce.

Carol Perrett closed on 101 in the deciding pairs with Di Moreland (100, 100) as Marcia ‘A’ beat Severus ‘A’ 5-4.

Davina Shannon had sent Severus into the pairs with a 4-2 advantage, but the hosts came on strong.

Severus ‘B’ also lost out in the final pairs to visitors Marcia ‘B’, captain Faye Hawksby and landlady Linda Welch snatching victory.

Burnholme led 4-2 going into the pairs at Tramways ‘B’, thanks to wins for Marj Pearson, Sharon Neads, Sarah Jackson and Caroline Whittaker.

Neads and Whittaker then combined to seal victory. Bev Harton was Tramways’ star.

Nella Majsterek sealed victory for Castle Howard Ox ‘A’ at home to Edinburgh Arms, whose lone singles success came from Amanda Bevan.

Edinburgh won two of the three pairs games, despite top scoring from Alison Walker.

In division two, Acomb were tied at 3-3 with visitors Saddle, but ended up losing out in a decider.

Sharon Nelson and Sharon Lyons edged Saddle in front and, although Rose Gray and Lisa Benton levelled, Vicky McClaren and Chris Patterson sealed the win.

Leeman and Jubilee ‘B’ were all-square entering the pairs, but hosts Leeman showed their mettle as Dawn Clarke and Jackie Gray edged them in front and Charlotte Witts teamed up with Margaret Yeomans to settle the match.

Debbie Witts and Janet Nelson added another point for a 6-3 win.

Shoulder bounced back to winning ways after a lean spell as they beat Clifton 5-4 despite being a player short. Ann Parkyn and Doreen Johnstone sealed match points.

Linda Embleton and Sandra Pallister were singles winners for Burton against visiting Green Tree and the hosts then cleaned up in the pairs for a 5-4 win.

Crescent ‘B’ land White Rose title

CRESCENT ‘B’ clinched the York White Rose Ladies Darts League title with 5-2 win over Ebor.

Crescent claimed the last four games through Val Mackenzie, Jean Hussein, Angie Hurst and Liza Moore to ensure they finished three points ahead of Flag & Whistle, who were 5-2 winners over Lord Collingwood.

Flag lost the first two games but rallied to take five in a row, with Toni Smallwood hitting a 121 in the last game.

Third-placed Lord Nelson went down 4-3 at New Earswick.

New York won the division two title despite losing 4-3 at runners-up Acomb Sports.

New York’s Maureen Tindall was in outstanding form, firing a 100 and a 108 checkout.

Clarence were 5-2 victors at home to Crescent ‘A’, with Jayne Cain firing a 125 for Clarence and Pam Husband scoring a 102 for Crescent.
