YORK City boss Russ Wilcox is hoping the return of joint-top scorer Jake Hyde can help get the team firing again.

Six-goal Hyde is back in contention for tomorrow's Sky Bet League Two clash at Cambridge United having served a three-match suspension.

The former Barnet striker was involved in the build-up to both of City's goals during last month's 2-2 draw with Luton prior to being controversially sent off for violent conduct at Kenilworth Road following a challenge on Nathan Doyle.

Wes Fletcher bagged a brace during the first game of Hyde's ban against Tranmere but the club have failed to net in their last two fixtures and Hyde is poised for a recall tomorrow.

On the 24-year-old forward's return, City chief Wilcox said: "He's a quality player and it's great to have him back. We've missed him during the last three games and, hopefully, he can be the one who unlocks the door for us.

"He certainly comes back into my thoughts. It's no coincidence that the teams at the bottom of the table have scored the fewest goals in our division.

"You've got to be able to win games 3-2 because it can't be 1-0 all the time. Even though the team did that very well last season, it cannot happen all the time.

"We were solid during the 0-0 draw against Exeter on Saturday, which was the first port of call after conceding two early goals in each half against Northampton, so we've got that base to work from and now we've got to score more goals."

Should Hyde make the starting XI, Wilcox could also consider a formation change, having started the last four matches with a 4-2-3-1 system.

On that possibility, he added: "We are looking at different ways to set up to try to win football matches and you never switch off as a football manager. It's a 24/7 job, but I'm lucky to have it.

"There are only 92 jobs in the country. I've got one of them and I will do everything I possibly can to make sure we stay up this season."

Having witnessed the Abbey Stadium crowd grow restless during a scouting mission at the U's 0-0 home draw with AFC Wimbledon, Wilcox is hoping, meanwhile, that his team can give them more reason to moan and groan.

"Cambridge have had an outstanding season for their first one back in the Football League and Richard Money has done a terrific job there," Wilcox reasoned. "The two FA Cup games they had against Manchester United will certainly help the club long-term but, sometimes, you get a hiccup after that because it's very hard to go back to League Two and perform after you've been to Old Trafford.

"Their home form hasn't been great since, so hopefully that will continue. I watched them against Wimbledon and the fans got a bit frustrated early on so, hopefully, we can frustrate them again by stamping our authority on the game from the start."

City go into the match having only won one of their last ten games, but Wilcox is not under-estimating the value of draws as his third-bottom team look to claw away from the drop zone.

"If you look at the big picture, we have picked up three results from our last four games whereas Carlisle have lost four on the spin and Tranmere have lost three out of four," he explained. "We wanted three points on Saturday but it's always important that, if you don't get them, you make sure you're hard to beat and that point might be invaluable at the end of the season.

"We've just got to keep fighting and scrapping. The table will change after every game but we've got to look after ourselves and make sure we keep the scoreboard ticking over."

Luke Summerfield, who has missed the last five games with a thigh injury, will not be considered for tomorrow's match but took part in this morning's warm-up at the club's Wigginton Road training base and might be back in the squad for Saturday's trip to AFC Wimbledon.

City, meanwhile, have no plans to make any loan additions before the Cambridge clash with Wilcox saying: "We are still looking but we've got a very busy week and it's important we are fully focused on that."
