PROMOTION-CHASING Malton & Norton RUFC survived a scare against Scarborough to record their 16th successive Yorkshire One win.

Malt replaced departed South African duo Zweli Sodladla and Vus Dyantjies with scrum-half Paul Angus and debutant centre Siya Moabi, and both played key roles in a 29-21 Gannock victory.

The home side opened the scoring after four minutes when a miss pass from Moabi found wing Ian Cooke. His break was followed by good work from full-back Sizwe Zondo before skipper Sam Triffitt got the touchdown.

Malton again got into the Scarborough 22-metre area and another forward drive gave Triffitt his second try, which Cooke converted.

After 26 minutes, Scarborough worked a back row move from a scrum to get their first score, which was converted. With half-time looming, Scarborough were reduced to 14 men when a prop was shown a yellow card, and Malton flanker Tom Lowry suffered the same fate.

After the break, Malt centre Josh Heggie broke and flanker Ali Coe scored in the corner for Cooke to convert.

Triffitt was yellow carded for a deliberate knock on and Scarborough got a penalty try from the resulting scrum.

Cooke kicked a penalty for a 22-14 lead and then Angus raced through the defence for a try converted by Cooke.

Scarborough retaliated with a late try.

YORK RI's hopes of promotion from Yorkshire Four were all but dashed as they lost 18-10 at home to Ossett.

With Yorkshire RFU president Ted Atkinson watching on at New Lane, RI struggled in the first half as Ossett took a 6-0 lead through two penalties.

The home side hit back with a Baptiste Briu penalty, which was followed by an Ossett try. RI’s Martin Ward crashed over for try that Briu converted to pull the score back to 11-10.

Briu missed a long-range penalty chance, only for the visitors to break away for a try under the posts.
