FORMER record try-scorer and England international Peter Fox has confirmed he is considering a return to York City Knights - but will only sign if it's "best all round" for himself and the club.

The League One outfit have begun talks with the 30-year-old, who is a free agent after leaving Halifax, but The Press understands "two or three" Championship clubs are also tailing him, as are a number of semi-professional rugby union clubs, both in northern England and France.

Fox, York born and bred who came through the York Acorn ARLC junior ranks, first made his name with the Knights in 2005 on loan from Leeds Rhinos, scoring a club record 25 tries in a season - in 26 appearances - as Mick Cook's team stormed to the National League Two (League One) title.

After bagging another 15 in 19 appearances in National League One the following year - being named in the NL1 Team of the Year, despite the team struggling and falling back down - he went on to spend eight seasons in Super League and won six England caps, scoring seven tries.

"I'm talking to a few clubs," confirmed Fox, who began running a nutrition franchise last year after leaving the full-time rugby arena.

"It's a matter of seeing what's best all round. I live in East Yorkshire, 40 minutes from York, and I must think of what's best for myself, my business and the club.

"The rugby would be part-time not full-time so my work is now my main source of income and that must come first. If I sign for someone I want to be able to put 110 per cent in, like I always do.

"I've got to make sure it's right for me and for the club. I don't want to sign willy-nilly and then not give 110 per cent.

"My full-time job is what I need to concentrate on and if I can fit rugby around it and still be able to give my all then I will do that."

Fox, after his startling first two seasons in the first-grade ranks with York, was then snapped up by Wakefield and went on to have two spells with the Wildcats sandwiching four seasons at Hull KR. He scored 52 tries in 105 games for Rovers, and 44 in 88 for Trinity.

He joined Championship big-guns Halifax midway through last season.

Fox's international caps came in 2008 against France and Wales - only to miss out on selection for that year's World Cup - and 2009 against France, Wales, New Zealand and Australia, most notably helping England to reach the final of the Four Nations against the Kangaroos by scoring two tries in a shock victory over the Kiwis, the then world champions.

Fox admitted he had never played rugby union before but, asked if a switch in codes was feasible at the age of 30, he said: "It's possible.

"It would be a challenge, but it's about what's right for me."

Of his previous time at his home-town club, he added: "Things have obviously changed since then but I enjoyed it there.

"I was playing alongside Jonny (Liddell, Fox's cousin), Dan Potter and lots of York lads. We had the likes of Matty Blaymire and Ian Kirke (both going on to Super League). I had some really good times."
