YORK Indoor Bowls Club 'A' won three rinks out of four but still lost 84-80 to Redcar in Yorkshire Over-55s League division one.

The away leg was played first and saw an excellent win for John Micklethwaite, Chris Bishop, Eric Hodgson and Geoff Walker.

Leading 8-1 after only four ends, they were pegged back to trail 10-8 four ends later, but they responded well by winning eight of the next eleven ends to move 20-15 ahead.

They dropped singles on the last two ends to finish 20-17 winners.

Dave Dale, Barry Walker, Jim Robertson and Graham Instone were struggling when the score stood at 26-5 against them with five ends to play, but they won three of them and helped the aggregate deficit by only losing 28-10.

The home rinks were confident of overturning the 15-shot difference and Alan Vowles, Ray Calpin, Tex Stevens and Malcolm Thompson got off to a great start. Helped by a six on the seventh end, they led 14-2 after eight ends.

At the same time, Dudley Williams, Andy Humphreys, Phil Parsons and Graham Brooke trailed 11-4, but a six on the ninth end, then a seven on 17th put them 23-15 ahead.

With Thompson’s team leading 22-14, a four to Brooke's side gave York 'A' the aggregate lead for the first time on the 19th end.

However, the visitors responded with a five then a two to make Brooke’s final score 27-23.

Swapped singles over the last two ends gave Thompson’s side a 23-16 victory, but unfortunately it was not enough to take the aggregate score.

York 'A', who took eight points to Redcar's ten, are in action again tomorrow as they play Hornsea, starting at noon.

York will face old rivals Featherstone in the next round of the Denny Cup after beating Huddersfield 73-68.

York had the edge early on as they led 22-14 on aggregate after five ends, then 37-31 after ten, but the West Yorkshire team came back and took the lead themselves after 15 ends at 53-50. York edged in front again and, with two ends to play, they led by eight shots.

At home, Dudley Williams, Nigel Macdonald, Phil Parsons and Phil Emmerson got off to a great start, leading 15-1 after seven ends.

Then kept it tight as they did not drop more than a two for the rest of the game in winning 21-13.

Alan Vowles, Malcolm Harrison, Phil Herridge and Adam Liddell trailed 17-11 after 14 ends, but pulled it back to 19-17 going into the last end, where they dropped a single to go down 20-17.

In Huddersfield, Neal Macdonald, Graham Instone, Stuart Smith and Dave Stroughair came from 14-10 down with three ends to play to finish up winning 18-14.

Ray Calpin, Tex Stevens, Graham Brooke and John Harris also had a good run-in. Trailing 19-9 after 15 ends, they won all but one of the remaining six ends to only lose 20-17.

York's game against Featherstone will be played on Saturday, November 29, starting at noon.

York take on North Cave in the Mason Trophy tomorrow at 12.30pm, and then York look to progress in the Yetton Trophy when they play Scarborough on Saturday, at noon.
