NEW Earswick crashed to a 16-2 defeat against Thornaby in a rearranged Yorkshire Over-55s Bowls League match.

The Huntington Road club's poor form in the over-55s continued with the usual trend of only one of the four rinks managing to win.

At home, Bob Elliot, Dave Moorhouse, Bob Barrett and skip Ralph Tiplady lost the first four ends against Bill Peirson to go behind 5-0.

For the next ten ends, the scoring was pretty even with Earswick 13-9 behind after 14 ends. They then won only one of the last seven ends to lose 22-11.

In the other home rink, Mick Head's squad of Dave Sykes, Eric Cookson, Gordon Storey and Dave Elcock were the only rink to win, beating J Gillespie’s rink.

Earswick were 17-15 in front after 16 ends but took five of the last six ends to win 24-16.

Away, Paul Murray, Jim Pinder, Brian Birch and skip Dave Imeson were 9-8 up after nine ends three ends later.

After 12 ends, they were 21-9 down, dropping an all-eight at the tenth end. They picked up only five shots against Thornaby’s 13 in the last nine ends as they lost 34-14.

In the other away rink, Vic Thompson, Pat Inwood, Dave Elcock and skip Kevin Potter, making his debut for the club, gave a good account of themselves after being eight shots down after 14 ends.

They won five of the next six ends to trail only 21-20 with one end to play, in which they held two shots to win the game with only one wood to go.

Thornaby skip G Fordy fired and, with help of two wicks, managed to get the shot to win 22-20.
