THE new indoor season got off to a poor start for New Earswick Indoor Bowls Club’ over-55s ranks.

They suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Redcar with only one of the four rinks managing to win.

That yielded the Huntington Road-based club just two points overall to Redcar’s 16.

At home, the rink of Pat Inwood, Brian Birch, Graham Lockwood and skipped by Bob Edwards found themselves 14-2 down after nine ends.

The rink rallied, winning seven of the next nine to lead 18-16 after 18 ends. But they then dropped a three and a two before picking up a two to lose 21-20.

In the other home match, Dave Imeson, Vic Thompson, Bruce Dobson and Terry Bellwood were all square after six ends.

However, they only picked up two singles in the next 11 ends to find themselves trailing 19-8 after 15 ends. The last six ends were fairly even with Redcar winning this rink 25-13.

In the away games, Bob Elliot, Gordon Fratson, Bob Barrett and Ralph Tiplady got off to the worst possible start, 11-3 down after seven ends and 18-4 after ten ends. They won nine of the last 11 ends but that did not halt a 24-18 reverse.

The performance of the day came from the rink of Dave Sykes, Eric Cookson, Dave Elcock and Mick Head.

They surged 8-0 to the good after six ends and then were 18-9 in front after 14.

But there then followed a slip with only one shot collected over the next five ends to find themselves 20-19 down.

Rather then fold, the New Earswick rink rallied to collect the two singles needed from the last two ends to triumph 21-20.
