RUSS Wilcox’s reign as York City manager started with a 1-0 defeat after Ryan Jarvis became the second player in as many games to be sent off.

The former Torquay striker saw red just past the hour for a late challenge on Nathaniel Knight-Percival and James Collins pounced on 86 minutes to secure the visitors' first away league win in 15 matches.

Shrewsbury had the best first-half chances with home keeper Michael Ingham reacting smartly to smother an Andy Mangan effort on seven minutes following poor defending by John McCombe, Keith Lowe and Marvin McCoy.

Mangan also forced a further save from Ingham at his near post after raiding through the right channel and had the ball in the net on 19 minutes but was flagged offside after following up a Bobby Grant shot.

At the other end, Ryan Brunt and Lewis Montrose both had hopeful long-range attempts saved.

After the break, Michael Coulson had an early free kick saved but City went down to ten men following Jarvis’ late lunge on Knight-Percival ten yards into the visitors' half.

Ingham went on to make an excellent reflex save from Jermaine Grandison’s header and Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro also nodded over from four yards following Mickey Demetriou’s left-wing cross.

A rare City attack saw Brunt sidefoot across the face of goal after persistent work by substitute Lindon Meikle near the byline.

But Collins won the points on 86 minutes, sticking a boot out to deflect Jordan Clark’s edge-of-the-box drive past Ingham.
