HONOURS in the inaugural year of the York Sunday Pool League were claimed by Winning Post and teams from the Loop sports bar.

Winning Post took the division one crown after toppling closest challengers Acomb ‘A’ in the final match of the season.

Captain Simon Newby got Acomb off to a flier when winning the opening two frames, only for Winning Post to respond by taking the next six on the spin to win, led by joint players of the season, Chris Dayman and Rob Healy.

Loop ‘A’ went into their final match at Poppleton Road WMC only needing a single point to clinch the division two title. This they did thanks to wins for Adam Jenkins and Joe Moore, joint players of the season.

Not to be outshone, Loop ‘B’ won the Cup final after shading Acomb ‘A’ 6-5. Acomb trailed 4-2 but countered to lead 5-4 with just the doubles and captain’s frames remaining.

Joe Goddard and John Patrick of Acomb assumed control of the doubles, only for Rob Barron to counter. That pitched the captains against each other - James Lee of Loop ‘B’ and Acomb’s Newby - with the former holding himself together to prevail and complete the Loop celebrations.

The season’s finale - the singles final and presentation night - will be at the Loop’s Fawcett Street base tomorrow, starting at 6pm. The final features Wednesday Pool League singles champion Newby against Acomb ‘B’ player Graham Bielby, competing in his first individual final, in a best of 11 contest.
