FIFTEEN golfers at Sandburn Hall GC have won a weekend at Forest Pines Golf Resort after excelling in the club’s order of merit competition.

The event, split into three divisions according to handicap, saw competitors battling in a series of qualifying competitions from April to September in a bid to make the final, which will be held in March, at the prestigious Lincolnshire resort.

Rob Heath, Bryan Wilson, Rob Scarce, Darren Emmerson and Matt Rowe were all winners from the lowest handicap division, while Paul Peake, Chris Barker, Dave Birch, Paul Cooper and John Moore succeeded in division two.

Phil Reeces, Chris Muldoon, Russell Yates, Steve Kennedy and Andy Craig-Smith were the other qualifiers.

Smart Alex is pure Sky star

ALEX BELT was the ace in the pack as Yorkshire refused to buckle under the pressure of a first round lead to win the SkyCaddie PGA England and Wales Inter-County Championship at the Belfry.

The Bridlington Links man, fresh from taking the PGA in England and Wales (North) crown last month, was the only player able to break 70 during the championship final which was held over two days on the famous Brabazon course. His round of 68 over the rain-soaked Warwickshire layout featured five birdies.

He along with team-mates Gareth Davies and captain Adrian Ambler walked away with a winners’ cheque of £4,000 after carding a four-under-par final score of 284.

They finished five shots clear of closest challengers Derbyshire.

Belt said: “It’s a very proud moment to play on behalf of your county and win an event like this.”
