YORK St John University are celebrating a fantastic 38-10 victory over the University of Sunderland in this year’s Varsity competition – 2014 Clash of the Minsters.

Teams competed in a variety of sports including basketball, dance, volleyball, tennis, snow-sports and badminton.

Particular highlights for York St John teams included the women’s netball.

The firsts won 75-20, the seconds 35-13 and the thirds 51-19.

The men’s rugby union side triumphed 12-0 and there were also victories for the women’s hockey (14-0) and all three men’s football teams (the seconds by 4-0), the thirds (3-2) and the fourths (4-1).

Matches took place across campus, including at the new sports facilities on Haxby Road, in Foss Sports Hall, and on the lawns at Lord Mayor’s Walk.

Said Students’ Union president Laura Jackson: “I am immensely proud of all the students who made Varsity go so smoothly. This includes the students who were competing but also those who volunteered to be Varsity makers.

“It is a great example of the community spirit at York St John.”

David Chesser, chief operating officer, added: “Sport at York St John has really developed and all the teams were a credit to the University.”
